You can start with simple things like sit. Just keep the training sessions short and understand that it may be hard to keep his attention. I started clicker training my puppy when he was around 9-weeks old; it takes a lot of patience. He's now 15-weeks and we are in puppy kindergarten learning simple stuff.

We called a trainer when she was 7 months old. We got her when she was 5 months old though. The vet recommended 6 months to a year.

Jen....the earlier you start with your own commands the better...start on his name, lol, call his name in a happy way and when he comes over say 'Good Boy' and pet him. These basics you should start yourself, but as far as a trainer or classes (for heel, stay, lay down) around 6 months is good because they tend to start understanding more around that age.

I have been told that before 4 months thier brains can't handle training? I don't know if it is true or not

I don't think that's true at all. I think the earlier you start the better. Plus it gives you something constructive to do with the pup. As long as you keep things positive and use yummy treats as rewards it's a lot of fun for both you and the pup. You just have to understand that you have to go slow and keep sessions short. I think the best thing you can do for your dog is to start training him when he is as young as possible before he starts to develop bad behaviors; it takes work, but it's best for everyone.

Also, the 'waiting until the pup is 6 months old rule' is an old rule that was used when obedience training consisted of choke collars and harsh corrections; the pup had to be at least 6 months old to handle that. But many trainers now use positive methods that young pups respond really well to.
