definitely ask about maintenance! Is there a maintenance person on-site? whats the average turn around time for a maintenance call?
Definitely want to see how soundproof the walls are.
What the lease terms are? can you go month to month after a year? How much does rent normally increase each year?
I would find residents and ask them if they are happy there, if there are pest problems, if they'd recommend living there...

This isn't so much a good to ask question as it is a good to see question...I have definitley underestimated the value of storage space...the more storage space the better!

If its not on the top floor, ask about the people who would live above you. Ask you fixes things and how fast they get fixed. Ask if there is a place to put your garbage between pick-ups.
These are all things we have problems with, and I wish we had asked when we took our apartment. We can't wait to get out of there.
Also you can ask about:

Flush the toilets to see if they work. Run the water in the sink to see if it works and most importantly run the water in the shower to see if there is good water pressure. Oh and make sure to check for phone outlets, if there are no phone outlet the phone company has to come in and install them and I think it costs around 200-250 to have this done. It really important to check the phone outlets if you're renting in a house and its their first time renting. THey may have 'overlooked' installing phone outlets just to save themselves money.

ANY MORE INFO FOR PRIVATE HOUSE????
Ask if it's LEGAL!!!!
Don't get 'screwed' like we did... They cracked down on these BIG time last year and we were evicted along with the other tenants 4 freakin' mths before our wedding.
Is the apt LEGAL was the FIRST question I asked when we were looking after that!
Good luck!

My one statement is go during different times of the day to see the neighborhood. FH and I loved our apt and booked it right away. But we are in a HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! neighborhood and Hate every minute of it!
