Having a small civil service wedding like a year before the big day...My reasoning for this is, I am 26 and I do not have insurance....Well, it would certainly help if I could be on my future husbands insurance plan....Anyways, I was wondering if by doing that the magic would be gone of that big day with the perfect wedding dress and bridesmaids and guests, etc. ????

Do you already live together? I work for an Insurance Broker. If you meet the Domestic Partner requirements and his Insurance Plan allows it you can go on it without being married. Also depending on your age there are options through Parents Insurance. FM me for more details.

Re: What are your feelings on.....
I was in the same situation and agree with the above post, you can get on your FH's insurance if you meet the domestic partner requirements, however, I chose to get married instead.
We had a small ceremony (11/18/2011) with just our parents and the officiant - the same one who will be marrying us again on 4/29/2012. I do not think that our civil ceremony will take away ANYTHING from our wedding date. It was small, intimate and just perfect. Our officiant told me that when the time comes for our wedding, we will probably be more relaxed and really no one in our family knows that we're married. I am really excited and looking forward to our 'wedding'

im in a similar situation and FH wants to have the civil ceremony before but since we meet requirments for domestic partnership i am more comfortable going that route.

I think that's absolutely fine. DH and I even considered it when we got engaged since he didn't have insurance. HE was the one who didn't want to do it, thinking that it would take away from that day. I disagree- your health is more important than a slip of paper any day. And besides, we were *technically* married on May 12th, 2010, 2 days before our wedding at our rehearsal! We signed the paperwork and the priest mailed it out that day!

I agree, I kind of want to do this, I'm in the same boat! Isn't it gross that this is what we have to do for affordable coverage? I don't think it will take away from it. If you can't qualify for that domestic partnership then go for it! I think it will be romantic and awesome to have almost like a 'secret' wedding first haha

Do you girls know how long you have to live together before you can claim DP? Do I have to change ALL my bills, etc? Some stuff I never switched over...

My cousin got married a few months before her big wedding because her DH is from Whales and his Visa was expiring and they needed to be married asap.

Me and my future husband became DP a month ago, for the same reasons...it was quick easy and you don't need anything but 2 forms of id and proof of address and $35, we haven't told anyone don't want them to feel like they missed out

I am in the same situation, but we don't live together...not sure what to do, but I don't think it will take away from the day of. As long as you two are happy and in love, who cares. There is no norm anymore, lol

u can def have a civil service, I had to do it too because FH didn't have insurance. I was also afraid that by the time the wedding would come, it was not gonna be the same, so we decided to keep the civil part very simple, I didn't change my name on any documents and very few people know about it

but since they passed the bill that same sex can wed, isnt that discrimination to opposite sex couples?

Re: What are your feelings on.....
It depends on your employer. Most companies have DP apply for both single sex and non-single sex couples. Mine has it only for single sex, but i think thats unusual these days.
