what are your thoughts on this?

what are your thoughts on this?

So I was talking to someone and they mentioned that they keep lists of gifts they have been given and their kids have been given in the past

this person does this so that they know what to give when its that persons turn..

to make this clearer.. here is an example..

Mr and Mrs Z have a graduation party for their son and Mr and Mrs X give their son $75 as a gift. Mr and Mrs Z keep a list of all the gifts given at the graduation party.

Now Mr. and Mrs. X have a graduation party for their daughter.
Mr and Mrs Z go check that list to see that Mr and Mrs X giave their son $75. So now they know to give at least $75 to Mr and Mrs X's daughter.

what are your thoughts on this? I thought it was a little strange, to me I just give what I feel is appropriate. But this person says they do it so that they dont feel stupid and not give a good enough gift.

I will probably make a list of gifts and names after the wedding, but that is just for record keeping and thank yous, but i dont think i will hold onto that list so that I can check how much a friend gave me so i know what to give when its their turn.

yeah I wouldn't do that...I don't mind if i give more sometimes you also have to look at the persons situation

I don't know for b-days or graduation but for weddings... sure.

If someone gives me $250 I will probably try to recipricate that

It doesn't always work out that way, but I think it is a good rule of thumb

very truen, it seemed this person was more worried about not giving enough and feeling embarrassed.

but for me i give what i feel is approriate and if i can a little more.

I guess it makes sense to give someone the same gift (like for a wedding) but it takes too much time and effort to keep a list like that and I am lazy so it is definitely not something I would do

My mother has everything written down on what was given and by who.. LISTS from years ago. She finally is getting rid of them. I had to write on an envelope of who gave me what for my engagement (not that much was given to me but still i had my aunt and uncle and my bro give me something) and kept all the cards. I plan to just do this until the wedding is over with and store it for just a goof later on in life but i never plan to write down anything given to our kids .. just do what you feel is right. That is what i always do.

yes - my friend LIVES by this rule... but yeah i agree with the girls above - i think its a pretty good thing to stick to, but its to time consuming lol i think i have a slight case of ADD so i would be able to do that lol

I know that a family member of mine DID this for their shower, and wedding 3 years ago and when I told her I was engaged, she pulled it out and was like you can expect this from person A and that from person B,, Person C gave us nothing...

I was shocked!

I was actually talking about this yesterday. I think doing this is ridiculous. You give what you can give, and thats it. I think people lost sight of what a gift is, something from the heart.
