DH and I picked out carpet for the stairs and upstairs hallway- it's like a deep taupe/gray depending on the light. There's paneling in the hallway now (previous owners were panelling freaks) but we're taking it off and I need to decide what color to paint. Would a buttercreamy color look nice??

Re: What color to paint hallway?
Doyou have a photo of the carpet?
I dont think gray and yellow are a match. Maybe a blue shade?

Is the hallway open to any of the rooms off it? If so you may want to go with a similar shade as the room you see off it.

Re: What color to paint hallway?
I think the carpet is more taupe than gray. I wanted to paint before the carpet is installed, but maybe I should wait to see how it looks. I mean are you supposed to pick the carpet or the paint first???
To answer your ? Fran, downstairs where the stairs lead to is painted an off-white/yellow and the only bedroom that's been painted off the hallway upstairs is sage.
thanks for your advice!

Re: What color to paint hallway?
Its easier to paint first (so you dont have to worry about getting the paint on the carpet) but if the color of the carpeting has a grey undertone (which taupe usually does or it can be a brown undertone which would look nice with yellow) and you paint a yellow, it will clash.
Unfortunetely, I did this with my couch. In the store it looked brownish taupe but when we got it in the house it was very gray. I totally hate that couch now..so I made a big mistake not getting a swatch and bringing it home to see the color in the right light.
