we are invited an engagement party for a couple we don't know very well. they are recently engaged, fairly young, both live with their parents, and their wedding is in 2005. they are not registered.
what on earth do we get them for their upcoming engagement party????

maybe something lenox/mikasa?( one of my first gifts was a lenox candydish and vase, and i am using them already where FI and i hang out)

IMO, gift certificates to any department stores are a great gift, everybody is going to get them vases, I wouldn't get them that. JMO Edited to add: Also, plain old money is always a great gift!

We found money to be most helpful as we began planning the wedding soon after the engagement party. A gift certificate is always nice, as well!

i agree that money or a giftcertificate is the best gift(and what i would want most)... but if they are having an engagement party it seems like they should have a registry somewhere... for my engagement my grandma gave me my wedding $ early.. but I personally get all excited opening up gifts... and its sentimental that someone got you something.. Perhaps something small along with $$?
cash...or what about a simon mall gift certificate...?

Between the engagement party and the shower, I have tons of vases, picture frames, and candle sticks and none of them match. Money or gift certificates are much more useful.
