What do you consider a good treadmill cardio regimen?

What do you consider a good treadmill cardio regimen?

For example.......

Do you run? walk? How often? Are you on an incline? If so, how long and how fast?
I do about 45 minutes of cardio 4x a week.

I know this is so mentally horrible but I wont get off the treadmill until it says (after I put in my weight) 400 calories, which usually takes me about 42 minutes with a few minutes of cool down.

I try and mix it up........some days I walk 4.2 on a 14.5 incline for the entire time.......and some days I will do 20 minutes of that and 20 minutes of running starting from 5.0--6.4 (I increase the speed each minute and then start over again until my 20 minutes are up.

But.......with incorporating weight training and eating habits........I'm still not where I'd like to be as far as hip and butt size are concerned (although DH says he notices its a lot smaller--but its hard for me to tell) :)

I guess Its just in my genes. But I would like to get someones opinion so I know If I'm on the right track. I dont know if the incline is making me bigger? Should I stop the incline or continue it?

Thanks for any opinions, suggestions, etc.

I'm wondering also Which is better - intervals, more time slower, less time faster - right now I tend to do a steady pace and it gets real boring.

I found a great web site, www.itrain.com , where you can pay a small fee $1 or $2 to download all sorts of cardio workouts. If you have an MP3 player you can put it on that or you can burn it onto a CD. I did it for the first time today at the gym and loved it. It's like having trainer tell you what to do, but it has music in the background and you can choose your pace. Good luck!!

I switch things up alot- but latley I have been doing this

intervals- 3 minutes at 5.0

2 minutes at 6.0

at 5.0 incline

it's tough b/c of the incline

but I read that you should always walk or run on the trendmill at atleast 2.0 b/c that most minics outside

I try to run for at least 45 minutes- last night I burned about 500 calories

always put your weight into the machine for more acturate cal counting otherwise take off about 20%

for now I like this better then running faster at lower incline- I seem to be able to stick with this better and heard from my trainer that it's better for fat burning

I am sure some one will disagree with me

that why I had to stop with doing a steady pace- I never could get myself to stay on- when I do intervals I am more active in my work out and it goes faster

Whether you walk or run, a mix of speed intervals, hills (or incline), and long runs is best. If you are doing this more than 3 days a week, you should also do one easy maintenance run on the 4th or 5th day.

The best goal is really to increase either your distance, speed, or time depending upon the kind of run you do. Don't worry about the calories--they will increase as you increase your speed or time, plus I'm not so sure those readings are accurate. They may be on the treadmill, but I think they are way off on most elliptical machines. JMO.
