I'm looking to book my hall this summer and budget is a big consideration. My sister got married at CHCC and it was beautiful, she had a venetian hour and everything was lovely, but it was $125 p/p. I'd like to be able to spend no more than $100 p/p (hopefully less).with everything including, like a great cocktail hour and a venetian hour. I know there are palces that start at $65, but do you think you sacrifice quality? What do you get out of the more expensive places?
I was thinking of looking at the less expensive places, so I'd have room to add on an extra vegan/kosher choice, and a venetian hour. WHat are your opinions/experiences regarding less expensive places vs. moe expensive places?

I think it depends on what you are looking for. Do you like contemporary, romantic, homey B&B feel, etc....?
Service means different things for different people. I think you can have a nice wedding paying 65/pp and even less at some places. Judge the places on how they treat and use you gut instincts. If it doesn't feel right don't go with them bc the price is right.
You can definitely have all the things you want and pay 100/pp

You might be able to get the price you want at the Swan Club...but I've never been to a wedding there...ask the girls on here, about the Swan Club... Also another though...maybe you could have it CHCC if you have a Friday or Sunday wedding....

Girl, you can call me the queen of catering halls. I visited almost every hall in nassau and suffolk county. From what I saw, there are a couple of factors that play into prices. The ambiance, the selection of food is important, location plays a big roll, and how many weddings they hold is also important. I'll FM you more information.....

i strongly believe you get what you pay for. You get better food and outstanding service but it all depends on what you want. I am sure many palces give great service and good food.JMO
also if you want one wedding at a time going on. It is usually part of it.

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Sometimes for the less expensive places the dinner choices are all served with the same sides (i.e. the chicken, fish and beef all come with the same rice and carrots) and at the more expensive halls each dish comes with different side dishes.
At the more expensive places I find that there is also a difference in the passed hor's... mini hotdogs and quiches vs. more elaborate items like mini crabcakes with roumelade, etc.
I didn't want the Vienesse house b/c I feel it kills the last hour (people don't really dance, etc).. so i can't talk about that.
Kosher entrees have to be brought in from a Kosher caterer and are usually served on different plates w. their own utensils (unless the hall you have it in has a kosher kitchen). When I worked at the Milleridge we charged an additional $25 for a kosher plate ON TOP OF the regular per person price.
At the Milleridge the cocktail hour items were in chaffing dishes.. at the more expensive places they are more elaborate 'themed' stations that are all staffed with servers. So, instead of having 8 chaffing dishes on a table, you have 6 separate serving stations- the Dim Sum Peking Duck station would be decorated with chop sticks, rice paper fans, etc....
That's all I can think about right now.

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
I want someplace more homey...it's winter so I want a fireplace, big wondows, wooden floors, someplace like the milleridge Inn, or I think someone suggested westbury manor to me. I like that kind of ambiance, and I think those palces tend to be cheaper than the palces like CHCC with the big modern ballrooms. I just want to know what I'm losing by paying $85 a head rather than $125

Westbury Manor totally fits the ambiance you want...but it doesnt come cheap...but then again I'm sure Friday or Sunday will make the difference.

visit LaGrange Inn, they definitely have a B&B homey feel. Fireplace in the foyer, large windows in the banquet room.

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Remember that most places charge Extra for the venetian hour, it's not part of the basic per head cost. We chose not to have it because it would have increased the price by a lot.
Considering that, sometimes it's not the actual place that makes the prices higher (though most cases it is). It can be the time of year and the many extras that couples tack on (like the venetian hour). The best way to find out is to go to the different places you like and tell them exactly what you are looking for. You never know, a place you would have never considered might be your dream location.
You'll find the right place for you. Good luck!

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Just my two cents...I just had my wedding at Westbury Manor last month. We paid less than $65pp (Friday night) and the guests got 7 choices of entree which everyone was raving about (not just the 7 choices, but the food itself!), we were the only wedding there and the service was AMAZING (noteworthy, really...I never expected that kind of service anywhere) not only for DH and me, but for every one of our guests!! Look into it--you do not have to spend a fortune!!

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Since Fh is Jewish, our only options are saturday night or Sunday. We're going for Saturday Night, we know its more expensive, but we're hoping that the fact that it's december will offset that.

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Check out Stewart Manor. Very simple Homey atmosphere and around $65 pp. Food at our tasting was fantastic. We are working with James and he has been awesome so far.
The difference in price will most likely show in the food, and the small details. (i.e., chicken marsala with potatoes and carrots, Vs. free range breast of chicken with a reduction sauce, risotto and asparagus.)
That is not to say you cannot have a nice wedding at a lower price. There are plenty of nice places where you can get a good deal.

WM quoted me $79++ for a Saturday night in September - that seemed VERY reasonable to me.

Re: What do you get for a more expensive hall?
Actually, I got married at CHCC in September 2000, on a Sunday evening, and I only paid $67 pp. So, you might want to investigate different months, days, times, if you want to have CHCC.

I agree...you get what you pay for. Just b/c you think the place might be expensive, still check it out....a lot of them are not as bad as you think. It also depends on what night you want..of course saturday is the most expensive...if I got married the night before my wedding, I would have saved over $10/head!
