what do you girls think of using to colors to seperate a living/dining combo?

in alot of levitt capes they have a living room and a dining room in one which is what i have. in the house i live in now its the same set up and my mom has it painted all one color. i was thinking about doing it two colors that work well together. im not sure how it would look please give me your opinions on this and if anyone has pics please post them. thanks so much


also does the ceiling always have to be white?

hi joy!

I don't know the exact set up of your house but do you have one continuous wall and then on the opposite side a break in the wall?

If so, I would paint the continous wall the color you want the living room area and then the back wall and opposite wall a different complimenting color.

Does that work?

using two complimentary colors is great....you can also hang drapes to differentiate the space or use a screen. HGTV.com had instructions on how to make one!

And no, the ceiling doesn't have to be white...just watch Trading Spaces or While you were out on TLC!!

you can also put a thick piece of molding down the line to separate the rooms. my parents have that separating our dining/living room

Be careful of a colored ceiling, Sometimes the ceiling will feel lower. Definitely choose a light color.

If the wall that runs from the living room to dining room is one continuous wall, you shouldn't separate it by color. If you put some type of molding or column or something than it's ok. As for the ceilings, they don't have to be white. My ceilings are a bone white and it gives it a nice warm feel.

the room together with one wall but the ceiling has sort of a header and breaks the flow of the room from both directions. im going to give it a shot and see what happens ill post pics and we can decide lol. im thinking of sage and gold? what other colors im looking for earth tones to keep it light

Sage and gold is beautiful! I am thinking about painting our molding metallic to keep a rust look going...

maybe just do one wall a different color as an accent wall...i've been in Levitt homes...maybe you can do the dining room wall (the one that seperates it from the kitchen). I'd use area rugs to seperate the area too!

I personally don't prefer different colors to separate the two rooms, but that's just me!! I also like a white ceiling to make the room feel as big as it can be, but I have seen very nice ceilings with color! You can do whatever YOU want in YOUR house!!! Yipee!

Could you post or email me a picture of your house. My dad used to work for Levitt when he was alive, back when they were being built, and I would love to see what the houses look like. Thanks.

i have the same hoouse as you i think ( :

i am doing the LR and DR the same....dark on the bottom, light on top with a chairrail. my ceiling is going to be painted the same color as the top part of the wall ( :

I have a Levitt house also but mines is a Ranch also with the LR/DR combo. We were going to put up a partial wall at first to seperate it...than we chickened out of that cause we were not to sure how it would look. I wanted to do two complimentary colors to seperate the 2 room, but DH is scared enough of color and of course he said no. I think it would look great Take lots of pics
