What do you guys think about pregnancy before owning a home?

Original post by DayBeforeThanksgiving

Just curious to know your opinions... I always said I wanted to wait to own a home before having children, but truthfully, the way Long Island is, I d on't see us owning a home in the near future here at all and I don't want to put my life on hold. Truth is that I really feel guilty if we start trying to have babies when we are still renting... but then again, who's to say that when we have a home, we'll be able to afford kids? You know, it's a catch 22... just want to know your opinions...

We'll never afford a house here. I won't have any eggs left if I wait.

Not only do we rent, but our landlord wants to move back to our house in April, when the baby is born... So we have to find a new place to rent after the holodays - 3 bdrms, since he has 2 daughters from his 1st marriage....

See, this is what would scare me about having children and not owning a home... you are at the whim of someone else. It is one thing to be displaced as a single person or a couple - it is a totally different issue if you have a child(ren) to accomodate as well.

I totally agree that houses in this area are super expensive, that said, rents aren't cheap either. If you can swing the down payment - the monthly mortgage might not be much more than a rent payment - plus you get the tax benefit of the mortgage interest and real estate taxes - so you might find that all in all the monthly payments would be comparable. One last thought ... paying the rents this area demand would make saving up for a house very difficult.

I guess if you are in a sweet position of paying a very low rent - I wouldn't wait for the kids. If I were paying a rent that is close to a mortgage payment - I would get the house first.

JMHO. Good Luck!!
