What do you think about registering for a honeymoon?

What do you think about registering for a honeymoon?

I found out one of my exes is getting married and his FW has a website... I check every so often (sometimes just to laugh at how different he looks- I'm so mean) to see if they updated the site, and I saw today they registered on 'my big day'.com, which is for a honeymoon registry.

I was looking at it and its so weird-- they registered for everything from air fare and hotel costs to taxi fares and postcard money! I think people chipping in for the hotel in airfare is okay but bring your own spending money!! Am I wrong?

To top it off, I read the FAQ, and in reality what they do is collect the money from the people who 'buy' things, take 9% out and cut you a check for the rest... they're better off getting cash!

Unless you use a specific registry for where you are going like the Sandals one, you don't know if you will ever see your money again. I read in Conte Nast Traveler to avoid these places. There is no guarentee that they won't shut down and take your money. And how do you how much you got from each person as a gift from them unless they tell you a specific amount on your card and who is cheesy enough to do that!!!!

I personally thought it was a cool idea. I think the opposite about chipping in for the airfare and hotel and think it would be cool for family and friends to purchase excursions and spa things.
After I read about how the money is actually collected, I didn't think it was as cool anymore. And now that I read about it not being reliable - I don't think I would do it. Nice idea though!

It is too bad the world isn't more honest! It would be a great idea.

Excursions and spa things are okay too- but these people were asking for dinner money, taxi money, postcard money, even calling card money!! It was a little out of hand :) I think it could be a nice idea too if it was set up through a reliable travel agent or something...

It also had an option to send the person an e-mail telling them what gift you purchase. I guess thats how you do it :)

Just curious as to what you guys thought. It's an interesting concept but to a point I think :)

Going Nutty you are too funny

That is kind of silly they are better off getting cash that way they won't get any deductions taken out. I don't see the piont of that registry

I think it's an awesome idea. I actually work for Starwood hotels and we have a honeymoon registry and we have awesome hotels all over. Of course they do not offer this service to employees, but they are coming out with giftcards soon, and I may ask for those!

Its funny you mention this site, cause one of my old 'friends' was using last year when she got married. I think I downplayed it because I heard through the grapevine that she couldnt find my address in time to invite me to the wedding but besides that....I think its a cool idea. Too bad 9% gets taken from you though. Why not just take the cash at gifts and reinburse yourself?

I think it's a pretty cool idea, in theory. I didn't know all the things that could go wrong until I read about them here, though. I think its worth a look.

With the way it works you register for different things but in the end they cut you a check... to me it's like registering for money!

I heard the same thing. It was even mentioned...maybe a yeah ago on NBC or Fox 5 when they did some wedding special.

ETA - I quoted the wrong person!
