What do you think about this?

What do you think about this?

FH works in a small group, 5 total. One guy is getting married and he only invited 2 of them! FH ISN't one of them.

Anyway, the 2 who were invited do not want to go because they don't want to drop a lot of money (it is a very nice reception place and would probably require $300/couple)...so one of them decides they would start a collection to get this guy a VERY EXPENSIVE electronic
($200). He wants $50 from each of them! FH thinks this is ridiculous because 1. He wasn't invited, why should he give a gift? 2. How rude is that...just because the other 2 guys are cheap doesn't mean the remaining 2 should have to fork over cash.

FH doesn't want to say anything since it is a small group and may start some 'talk.'

I say, 'open your mouth' since that $50 is important to me since we are paying an arm and a leg for our own wedding!!!!

Sometimes guys are worse than girls with their 'talk'!!

I would tell my FH, to open his mouth and say no way

BUT

Is he friends with the person getting married? Do they socialize?

If they are friends, I would say go in on the 50 bucks, but if not, hell's no that $50 would most def be going towards my own wedding!!

This sounds a little like a work shower - this is the only case it's acceptable to invite someone to a wedding related event that is not invited to the wedding. It's up to you and FH if he wants to contribute but I don't think it's that bad of a request.

FH is new to the group, so he doesn't even know this guy well...

In any other circumstance, I would say that this is fine...but it is the simple fact that the 2 invited guys don't want to shell out the cash to attend the wedding so they are doing this instead....

Plus, I can see taking the guy out for lunch/dinner/drinks....which would be more like a 'work shower.' Every work showed I have been to required like $10/person to buy some food/cake, and perhaps a small gift...

Well it seems really tacky to me that your FH coworkers want your FH to help defray the cost of going to the wedding!!!
I think it's kind of cheap of your FH coworkers to try and get away with only $50 (assuming they can afford more)

Tacky, tacky, tacky.

Your FH should politely tell them that him and you already planned to get the couple somethig separate on your own. This way, he gets out of the $50 thing but doesn't look bad.

I would tell my FI to chip in for it if he wanted to or tell them he can't afford it since he is saving for his own wedding right now. Either way I would make it his call.

If I were in his shoes I would chip, $50 isn't going to break the bank and I wouldnt want to look cheap in front of the people I work with. Especially since you know they will probably do something similar for you. Office politics suck but O WELL!
