What do you think of this?

What do you think of this?

I want to send my friend something different, but memorable and long lasting to mark the birth of her first child.
I am considering sending an engraved sterling silver julep cup, with the baby's name, birthdate, weight/length/time, etc. and a baby seedling (tree) tucked inside. They could plant the tree this Spring, and watch it grow as their baby grows.

To the other Moms - do you think this is corny? Would you like this as a gift?

ps - Once we move, I am considering planting a tree in our yard to mark Paul's 1st birthday, so that's how I came up with the idea.

I think its a great idea. I would LOVE if I got that as a gift for Luke. I'm excited that Paul will be having his own tree too. You're so creative!

edited to add: Pls let me know where you get that and what it costs, I have 2 PG friends that I would love to possibly use that idea. tx

I LOVE that idea! Add me to the list of those who'd like to know the cost and other details. I'd like to do it as a christening gift for a special friend's baby.

Re: What do you think of this?

Sounds like a lovely idea. I just wanted to add that my parents planted a tree in our yard when I was first born. I still remember being a little girl and telling anyone who would listen about my tree. Now, you'll probably think I'm nuts, but when my parents sold the house a few years ago, I think I was more upset to leave the tree than the house I grew up in. (well, maybe not, but I was upset )
Edited to add: I just wanted to say, I hope you don't think I'm trying to discourage you from sending a tree, I'm saying that it will probably mean a lot to both the parents and the child in the future.

Re: What do you think of this?

Thanks ladies....so far, I haven't been able to find any place online that I can order the seedling and the cup. I'm going to have to purchase them separately. RedEnvelope has a 'kit' but they won't personalize the cup with anything more than just 'Baby' on it.

And, some of the nursery sites that I've searched require you to purchase the seedlings in bulk, which give you a slightly less expensive rate. If I have to purchase 5 seedlings, would anyone else want to buy one? I only need two! One for my friend's baby, and one for Paul!

SomedayBride - I think your story is precious! If I had my own tree, I am sure I would have 'grown' attached to it, too! Did you carve your name in it?
