What do you wear to...

A black tie optional wedding. Is a long dress required? Can you wear a nice cocktail length dress and wear some nice jewelry to dress it up?

I would wear a floor length dress/gown because I would want to be dressed similarly to the formality of the other guests but you could probably get away with a cocktail dress depending on how 'formal' it looks.

We just went to a black tie optional wedding at The New York Botanical Garden. DF wore a tux and I wore a black ball gown. Most of the women wore gowns. Some of the brides friends wore cocktail dresses but they said they felt under- dressed.
Where is the wedding? What does the invite look like? If it was a super formal looking invite I would go with a gown. If it was a less formal invite then I would go with a cocktail dress.
