What do you wear to a fundraiser?

FH and I are going to make an appearance at a fundraiser tonight for one of his clients. It's at some mansion in Old Westbury. What do I wear? I'm clueless.

i would wear a somewhat classic but elegant short black dress perhaps?? what kind of gorup are they fundraising for? do you know what the invite says??
