i mean, i'm not stupid - i know what alphabetical order is .... but when you have a place card for an unmarried couple, you put the two names on one card:
Mr. A Ms. B
..... who goes on top, the guy, the girl, or whoever was actually invited (ie: our actual friend as opposed to their date)
... also, how do we alphabetize it?
Thanks

Re: what does 'alphabetical order' mean...
We did whoever was actually invited, and then we alphabetized based on the first name on the card.

We're going to do whoever was invited by the last name of the first person on the card.

whoever was invited should go first and then alphabetize by that person's last name.

I would say that alphabetical order doesnt apply here. For family i obviously put their name first, for friends, it depends on the specific situation like you said - the person you really invited rather than their date should be first.

Re: what does 'alphabetical order' mean...
but say you invited a couple who aren't married...
and it's John Smith and Sally Brown...
you want to place it with the S's not B's.

Formal etiquette actually says that the girl's name should be listed first if they're not Mr. & Mrs. So that's what I did

so who would you alphabetize it by? his or her name (assuming he was invited and she is a guest)?

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz and i can do it backwards zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba (like honestly, i can recite it backwards.. my mother thinks its awesome and the 50 states in alphabetical order)
okay i'm being a smartass...
i'd do it by the last name or the person you invited. but if you invited a couple (like i did our neighbors)
mr bob smith and jane johnson go by his name.. the mans name usually comes first.

Laura is right. And you alphabetize by girls last name. When FH and I go to events our card is always where my name would be, not his.

I alphabetized by the girl's name. Honestly, I wouldn't have known better had I not looked it up.....and I'm sure most people don't know.
