What does everyone think is a good price for a house is?
I know there are a lot of things that play into the right cost of a house but what I am curious what people think we should be paying for houses these days.
We have a thread for underpriced and overpriced homes I am curious what people think is the right range.
Houses are expensive no doubt but it seems like people want to have everything updates and brand new and get it for $300K

I want everything brand new custom built or atleast almost brand new and I will live where I am until I can have what I want. and having Ron in the business makes it so hard bc he is exposed to the best of the best.. PAIN!
I would say 650k and up!

Hi T! Long time no see. I can understand your request and you are in a decent price range for it! You are lucky though things that you don't like Ronnie can always fix. Matt is not that handy!!! As long as you have a house with a good basis to start from.

After seeing all these homes posted in other states, and then I see whats on LI for the prices...yuck!
i'll stay where I am also till the market is better (if it gets better)!
edited to add these people are nuts for what they are asking for some of these homes...and homes is using a nice word.

It is frustrating when you see what other states have to offer. But there is a trade off with moving to some of those states.
There are great houses out there but some of them need a little work.
As for the market getting better I don't know if we are going to see the prices go down. They should level off as the rates go up.

FI and I know what we want and we know we wont get it up here. We are going to FL and having our home custom built and its costing A LOT less then what is up here.
I think the prices up here are a little ridiculous

Re: What does everyone think is a good price for a house is?
A lot of the cost is school district and location. We are looking Bellmore/Merrick and to get something that does not really need a lot of work is about 450-500k- which is a crazy amount of money for a house, but it is what it is. I don't think they will go down anytime soon, and if they do I don't think they will go down a lot. People will need to lower the prices a bit when the interest rates start rising, but I am pretty sure they won't go down too much.

If you go out East more to Suffolk, you can get a decent home for $300K..
Re: What does everyone think is a good price for a house is?
When DH and I were in NY...we started looking at houses in our neighborhood (in Queens - since I worked on LI and DH worked in Westchester)...and while the houses were in the $600K+ range...there were some great attached three story tudor houses in the $400K range...
If things were different and we were on LI I think we would look in the 400 range as well...

Michelle that is so true. Suffolk is still reasonable, but they seem to be going up as well.
Re: What does everyone think is a good price for a house is?
Make a list and rank your priorities. Real Estate cost what it cost.
Do you need: A specific location An above average school district Specific Health Care Needs Access to cultural events close proximity to family
The median value of a Nassau County home recently hit 400,000. If you list leads you to Nassau County you have to be realistic about what it will cost to live there. A co -op condo might be the way to start out if you are drawn to high cost of living area. Weigh your priorities and finances and go from there.

For us the school district was very important. Granted my commute to work everyday SUCK$, but to give Brandon a better way of life is worth it. once Steve gets promoted I will look into working closer to home. Right now I can't afford to take a pay cut to work on LI

Fran you wouldn't
Trust me...
The ideas Ronnie has you wouldn't get lost........ If you saw my apt you would understand..
I have 3 bedrooms and I have NO ROOM for CLOTHES and I didn't even have my shower yet and my attic is FULLLL ..
Re: What does everyone think is a good price for a house is?
Theresa...I always thought I wanted a big house...until we lived in a duplex apt...it was about 1800 sq feet...and to be honest...we didn't need the space and it was a b*tch to clean everything...
I now drool over small, easy to clean houses in great locations...
