what does fondant taste like?

Original post by CherylBooch

I just found out that my hall does not let whipped cream cakes stay out for display during the reception for fear of it going sour. (yes I know other halls do this, but the Milleridge doesn't )
SO my question. Buttercream or fondant?
I really don't like buttercream (blech) so what does fondant taste like?

A friend of mine wanted fondant but the plain stuff tastes horrible. She bought a 'cake kit' with vanilla fondant & it was wonderful! Her cake kit was from Gail Watson Cakes. They sent her the fondant, sugar flowers, assembly pictures & instructions. She gve it to her catering hall & they did the rest. It was an extra $300 to her budget but the catering hall was charging an extra $150 for fondant to it wasn't a huge splurge. Here's her cake -

Gail was so awesome to work with that I may have her make my cake from start to finish. Even if it's just a kit she can change the flowers & colors for your day! I've even heard of white chocolate fondant but not a lot of people make it & that might be yummy too!

I spoke to FH and he said fondant is a sugarry paste which is not very tasty and that putting buttercream on b/f the fondant is not an option...but it looks nice. He said we can get a 'pretty cake' and a cake to serve...

Putting buttercream on before is not an option? I am not sure. Every baker I have gone to has offered that option. Actually they automatically do it. It helps smooth out the cake so the fondant can be rolled over it and it also gives the cake more of a taste. It is a very small, thin layer. The Milleridge is a great bakery. You may want to see if they can do that if you like the look of fondant.

Fondant looks pretty but tastes nasty. I used the Milleridge Bakery and really wanted the smooth look of fondant but buttercream frosting. They are able to do the smooth look of fondant with buttercream and your cake can stay out during the ceremony. It will not be as smooth and perfect as fondant, but still looks nice IMO. Here's a pic of my Milleridge cake with buttercream.

Thanks guys. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. I have to make my final decision by this afternoon, so ordering cakes to try it isn't an option.

Does anyone ever eat the cake anyway??

OK I think you helped me make a decision.

I always eat the cake. honestly - I think it's the fondant cakes that people don't eat. they can be dry.

Make sure you know when they are making your cake regardless of whether it is buttercream or fondant. Places often try to make it a week early and freeze it.
They know it will thaw while it is left out (problem is that it will be really wet and soggy)

I think fondant looks beautiful but it isnt included in the cakes provided by my hall so it was not an option for me anyway. My parents wanted whipped cream but after hears how it goes sour and 'melts', I will go with buttercream.

I gotta be honest -- I rarely , if ever, eat the cake at wedddings. I stuff myself so much at the cocktail hour/dinner that I hardly care about the cake, usually busy drinking and dancing at that piont. And then if there is other desserts on the table, or a Vienesse table, I tend to grab at that b/f the cake!

However this is not to say you should sacrifice a good tasting cake for 'style' only... I think you just have to prioritize what is more important to you : is it more important to have something you think is delish? Or more important to have something that your guests will look at and say 'wow,' and will be visually beautiful in your pics.

Personally I don't care if I have THE best tasting cake in the universe, so I'm bascially going to choose more on the visual aspect than the taste. That said, I still don't think I'm using fondant.. I'll have to figure out when I look at my cake choices next week

Re: what does fondant taste like?

peopelusually don't eat the cake, b/c they have a reputation of being bad,. I always eat the cake.
If its bad, I don't eat a lot of it.
My riends told me they were getting cannoli creme & I though that would be gross
(personal taste) but I have to say they had the best wedding cake I'd had in a long time. Its had chocolate cake, which I think is more moist than yellow cake.

People often pick at cakes, & won't eat the buttercream if they don't lie it ( like FH's autn) of won't eat the filling if it has fruit (FH).
You can't please everyone.
I know you are trying to find something YOU like, but unfortunately, the people that don't get to eat the cake are usually the bride & groom!

I say either get the whipped cream & don't display it or get the smoothed out buttercream & eat around it.

The wedding cake is one of the most difficult tasks I am experiencing. Anyone else?

Here was a response my friend got about using fondant from Gail Watson:

'Fondant is not as tasty as buttercream, but not because of the flavor so much, but because of the sweetness and texture. A flavoring would not make much of a difference. We do make a white chocolate fondant, it is a lesser evil.

When we make the cake there is a layer of buttercream underneath the fondant. Not as much as on a regular cake, but there is some.'

I hope it helps! It's a tough decision that we are NOT looking forward to making...especially since we LOVE the look of fondant & LOVE the taste of butter cream!

Yes it was buttercream! And it was delicious. If you eat anything that day...eat the cake!

My cousin's wedding cake was fondaunt - or however you spell it - The cake looked beautiful ! - And when they cut it, only the very top has a thin layer of the icing - it's not like if you would get whipped cream or butter cream -
it does have a very distinct taste - it's kind of like the white part of a black and white cookie -
