I was reading another board, and the topic of respect and titles came up. It seems that most people prefer their children to call all adult non-relatives Mr. and Mrs. SoAndSo. I grew up calling my parents' friends and our neighbors by their first names, and I planned to do the same with the Lima Bean. Lesser known adults will be addressed more formally, with Mr. and Mrs. Am I really in the minority??

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
for my close friends.... i will have them call them aunt & uncle.... same as have been done with my friends kids with me - they all call me Aunt Lisa with the full knowledge that I'm not their aunt.... it's more a term of respect i think. i agree with the less close friends - mr. & mrs. is fine!

Emma calls my and FH's friends Aunt and Uncle. I think Mr and Mrs are too formal for our friends. Maybe if we are out in public I will say 'Emma, say hi to Mr. Mailman' or whatever.
I think its funny listening to FSiL say... 'Im her only blood aunt' Its fun to make the psycho jealous

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
Justin has more aunts and uncles then he knows what to do with. Which is funny considering, my DH is an only child and I only have a younger sister who has no kids yet
So, close friends or cousins are Aunt and Uncle. Everyone else is addressed by their first names.

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
very close friends will be aunt and uncle, friends will be by the first name and regular adults (people we work with, neighbors, etc..) will be Mr and Mrs.
My sixth grade teacher and my parents are very good friends and I still call her Miss lastname. She tells my me all the time I can call her by her first name, but its just a respect thing. (She is also married and has been for years but when I had her as my teacher she wasnt married yet so I call her by her maiden name)

I was thinking of this today, we call my parents friends auntie or uncle so I think the same would hold through for my child/children

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
Well basing it on my sisters kids, As far as friends, they only call our closest friend 'Zia' (aunt).. anyone else is first name basis.. I cant see my kids calling anyone else Aunt or uncle. gets too confusing.. I really grew up only calling my aunts and uncles 'zia' and 'zio' if youre not my aunt, youre not my aunt, lol. It loses its meaning if the kid is calling 25 friends, 'aunt' and 'uncle'... JMO.
A friend of mine had her kids calling us 'aunt and uncle' in the beginning but thekids are like buddies with us and call us our first names now, which i really prefer..
i think it really depends on how you grew up and your relationship to people in your life..
I was in Canada a few years ago with my parents, visitng an old friend of my moms, and they were teling their grandchildren to call my mom and dad 'zia' and 'zio', it was nice as respect, but totally awkward in my opinion... I was calling them their first names the whole time... i just wasnt raised that way..
no right or wrong !

I am 26 years old and I still can't do the first name thing.
I will have them do aunt and uncle for very close and mr. and mrs. for others.

I am with Neva and Shamma. I still call some of my parent's friends uncle and aunt whatever. For others I use Mr. And Mrs.

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
Well my sister doesn't want to be called Aunt. she says Joanne is just fine!! (she's a pain in the butt) My niece & nephews only call me Aunt Tracy when they are talking about me to someone or when they want something! I call my brothers & sisters Auntie... or Uncle ... So Patrick gets to know them that way.
My FH sister name is Mary & because they have an Auntie Mary who she's not crazy about she doesn't want to be called Auntie Mary. she signs everything GodMother Mary. Like Patrick is going to call her that!!
As for friends only the REALLY close ones will he call Auntie or Uncle. The rest will be known as their 1st name.
I'd have a heart attack if one of my friends kids called me Mrs *******. I still don't like to be called MAMM' by sales people!!

No Jen, you are not a freak!! I think the same way you do! Some of my close friends have their kids call me 'aunt', but like Anna said, it can get out of hand if all your friends do!!! Close paesans (sp?) of the family were called aunt and uncle, but that was a respect thing and she was my 'cumare' (godmother).
Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
never thought about it...but we always called my parents friends by the first names

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
The only person in my life that I call 'Aunt' but really isn't a blood relative is my Mom's best friend since high school - and it's the way my Mom taught us to address her and 'Uncle' for her husband, to show respect.
But, so far I really have not gotten into the habit of calling any of my friends 'aunt' when addressing them on Paul's behalf. I prefer that everyone just be known to him by first names, b/c all of my cousins insist on being called 'aunts.' So, that would just be overkill and confusing to him in the long term, IMO.
HOWEVER, you would be very surprised how many of my friends have actually taken it upon themselves to call themselves 'aunt' when speaking or writing cards to my son - shocking!

Re: What does/will your child(ren) call your friends?
Claud- people actually write 'Love Aunt XX' on Paul's cards without being his 'real' Aunt? That shocks me too.
I was raised that everyone was Mr. & Mrs. and only my 'real' Aunts and Uncles were called those names. I actually still refer to all of them as Aunt and Uncle. But I do call my best friend's one Aunt Aunt Suzie since she was around a lot when we were going up and that is what everyone always called her. I do not consider her my Aunt but it is her 'name' to me now. I guess it is a term of respect. I cannot imagine calling her Susie only.
My friends children all call me Michele and always have. There is only one friend that the baby will call Aunt and that is my best friend of over 25 years. And that is really because I want to ask her to be the baby's Godmother- but Scott wants his sister. That is a whole different thread.

I was raised the same way as Michele...everyone was Mr. and Mrs. and only Aunts and Uncles are called that. My close girlfriends daugther calls me by my first name and I agree with most that close friends can be called by their first name, but others should be addressed more formally.
