No, I don't know either. I've been wondering the same thing. Other people have said she 'makes sure everything comes together' but I'm not really sure what that means.

Re: What exactly does a DAY OF COORDINATOR do?
Basically they are there to help make sure your wedding runs smoothly. Depending on who you choose it can include...
checking up on your vendors two weeks before the wedding
confirming arrival times with vendors
having an emergency kit in case of clothing problems arise
handing out programs and petals at the ceremony
making sure things are set up they way you want at the ceremony and reception
I didn't have one becasue my hall was fantastic about handling all those things and the bridal attendant I had helped with dress problems etc...
If you are having a huge wedding it may be good to have a 'day of' coordinator but many girls find they really don't need one.
It can be a great weight off you shoulders it you tend to worry about stuff, you may want to look into it. --------------------------------------- I wanted to find someone who would be sort of like a 'Bridal Go-fer'... someone to go out and bring back breakfast to the house for the girls and vendors the morning of the wedding, someone to hand out the programs and rose petals cones at the ceremony and schlep all my stuff back from the reception (extra favors, table numbers, guest book...) We ended up dragging that stuff with us to our hotel after the reception. That was a pain. But I didn't need anyone to work with the vendors. I handled that myself.
Hmm...maybe I should start a little side business...Bridal Go-fer: Your personal go-fer on your special day!!!

Re: What exactly does a DAY OF COORDINATOR do?
Ours did so much for us, I won't even try to list everything, but in addition to the above, she came up with a vendor payment schedule as well as a schedule for the day of. She also helped with a few recommendations before the wedding (e.g., where to get tuxes, etc). Having a coordinator deal with vendors can be particularly helpful because a coordinator, unlike a bride, will actually deal with these vendors again. Because they will have a 'reputation' with the coordinator (who can either send them repeat business or tell clients they had bad experiences with them), vendors have particularly strong incentives to fulfill their contracts. Our hall was fantastic, but I'm still soooo glad that I hired a coordinator - at least for me, the way to think about it is that you spend so much time and money working on the details (as well as the big things!) that comprise your wedding, and a day-of coordinator actually lets you enjoy your wedding instead of having to work. See my review on the review board for more info.
