I brought mine to the post office today and I told them I wanted them hand cancelled b/c that's what all my LIW girls suggested (TIA!!!) I thought if he hand cancelled them I wouldn' t need an ugly stamp, but he made me put stamps on and THEN he hand cancelled them. Is this how the rest of you did it?

it just means that they dont go through the one machine that puts the red stamp on top of the stamps

I hand cancelled all of our invitations at the post office myself. Since we mailed our invitations at the peak of hoiliday season, I surely did not want snowmen on our costly invitations with the calligraphy. I also thought that it was too Christmas-y and we had a Jewish wedding. None of our invitations were reported as destroyed either because they did not go through a machine. Here is the comparison:

#1 Hand cancelled:
#2 Not hand cancelled.

I took mine to be hand cancelled too! I was happy I did it and watched the guy who started then left cause I didn't want to bother him.
It looked great, no ugly stamp, no bar code,
