What exactly does it mean to 'hand cancel' the invites?

I brought mine to the post office today and I told them I wanted them hand cancelled b/c that's what all my LIW girls suggested (TIA!!!) I thought if he hand cancelled them I wouldn' t need an ugly stamp, but he made me put stamps on and THEN he hand cancelled them. Is this how the rest of you did it?

Thats when the post office hand stamps them , so that way the stamp is done neatly ,,

Yes, my invites had stamps on them and then I brought them to the post office and hand canceled them by stamping them.

Sounds right, I think it's to keep them from having to go thru the cancelling machine.

I took the time to hand cancel 125 invitations and wished I had just given them to the post office to send through the machine. The ink was really wet and got smudged on some. When I put them back in the box as I did them, the ink would get on the back of the envelope in front of it. Make sure the ink is dry before you put them on one another.
