What exactly is a Gift Registry ??? Is it mandatory ??? *NM*

It is not mandatory, but will make it easier for the bride, groom and guests (who may want to buy a 'gift' and not give cash). I am only registering for my shower. I didn't want to, but my sister said I should, so I'll probably go into Fortunoff with my FI and list things that we always wanted, but never bought. Usually people register for household items: china, crystalware, silver flatware, everyday dishes, toaster, blenders, towels, etc.). But, many couples who are already living together may have these things and some couples may not want them. Another problem is space, we live in a 1 BR apt in Queens and do not have a place for these things!

Ditto to what Nina said...also, some people are now registering for honeymoons...where people can contribute money towards your honeymoon - seems to be what many are doing who already live together and have all their household items...Just a thought. Good luck!

Basically in NYC you need to register for engagement gifts and shower gifts. You should try to register for things in all price ranges, if you register for only expensive gifts you may end up with duplicate items or stuff thats not on your registry. It is also a good idea to register in more then one place so people have an option and can go to a place that is closest to them. FYI - both Fortunoffs and Bed Bath and Beyond will give you cash back if you do get duplicate items or something you decide you dont want.
