My parents want to throw us an engagement party for a sunday brunch in a nyc restaurant. what the hell goes on during one of these things? is it usually formal sit down? any entertainment? just speeches? yelp!

ours was in a restaurant for dinner....it was no entertainment, kind of like a cocktail party for us..just mingling, getting to know each other, eat, drink and be merry! OPh, and open gifts!!!!!!!!!!

There was about 4 passed appetizers, and then for dinner: it was not sit down..theynhad chafing stations with a seafood entree, a chicken entree and a beef entree and potato and veggies...ooh..and salad beforehand...
It was a blast!

Toasts, friend gather to celebrate. Sometimes in certain cultures, there are rituals. An excuse to party!

ours was a party with a dj and food. we had a great time. But if its at a restaurant, then it is more casual and intimate, with closer family members and great food.

I think because I've never been to one i'm having a hard time picturing it, and an even harder time helping to plan the forum with my mom!!

we had a party, wasnt an intimate as a sit down dinner. we had fun, we get to dance, drink and have fun. we didnt open presents or have speeches we wanted to save that for the wedding. I have been to brunches and dinner and they were lovely.

We had our engagement party, very informal, at FIL's house just so the families could meet and greet. We opened the presents after alot of the people went home. A few of the very close family and friends stayed to see what we got.

we had one in our backyard. we had a buffet style dinner. it was alot of fun. we didn't open presents at the party.

We had a band at ours so lots of people danced. Mostly everyone mingled and caught up or got to know one another. We did not open gifts at ours. We did a mini cake-cutting and 1st dance. It was great!
ETA: We had a sit-down dinner.

We had ours in FSIL beautiful backyard. We had a buffet dinner, I asked my MOH and BM to be in the BP. We also opened the presents because everyone wanted to see what we got. We had a great time.

Mine was a sit down dinner at a restaraunt. We had about 60 people. There was a nice cocktail hour, followed by appetizers, salad,dinner and cake. My Dad gave a speach. We had a table in the corner for gifts which we opened when we got home. As people entered the room FH and I, and our parents greated guests. There was also a table with place cards, no holders nothing too fancy. Each couple got a favor which was a small gel candle with seashells in it. It was awesome!

ours was in my backyard. we made it a little nicer by renting one of those big white tents. my cousin is a dj, so he brought his equipment so we had some background music. we had it catered. it was really nice! no speeches, no dancing, just a lot of fun. i made choclate favors which I FORGOT to give out!!!

We had one at my parents house. Very informal - drinks and buffet dinner. My dad gave a speech, and my brother and sister did too. It was a great day!
We didnt open the gifts at the party, but did after with my family and very good friends.

mine was a 50 person cocktail party - lots of mingling, everyone meeting, and then a buffet dinner.
My parents spoke, and then his parents spoke, and then we spoke and thanked everyone for their love and support.
And then I put together a video montage of FH and I growing up set to music and made everyone cry.
My mother made us cut a cake, although I thought that was too 'wedding-y' and there was a CD playing in the background that FH and I burned of all our fave music.
I would not suggest opening the presents at the party, unless everyone is really close and the affair is very casual. I tend to think that is a little tacky.
