What happens at the 1st prenatal visit?

Is this something my husband should come to?

Just found out I'm pregnant, totally unplanned, but not unwanted. I'm a bit in shock still...

First off, Congrats!!!!!!!!
The 1st prenatal appt should discuss vitamins (which you need to start asap, especially folic acid) and eating/exercise habits, blood work/urnine test will be done, weight (yuck) and may include an internal exam. My midwife doesn't do internals until you are 8 weeks but many doctors/midwives do. They will probably give you some literature
You should also consider if your current GYN is the doctor you want to work with during your pregnancy. I really liked my doctor's office but felt a midwife was better for me during this time. Have a list of questions ready to ask. Also, begin to consider your birthing options. You can ask a doctor what their c-section rate is. I got a good book called A Thinking Women's Guide to a Better Birth. It gives the pros and cons of many medical techniques.

I found out from my GP. She's not there today, her assistant gave me the results. I made an appt w/ my gyn, but I'm not sure it it's too early, I'm just pushing 5 weeks.

The first appointment isn't terribly exciting, so if your dh can't make it, it's not a big deal. Just be sure he's around for the u/s. Patrick got a bigger kick out of that than I did. He was so excited!!!

Congrats. The first visit is mainly talking. You definately want your DH to be there for the ultrasounds!!!

It was answered! I will add that I had a trans******l u/s at 6 weeks then again at 8 weeks to date the pg. Even though I *knew* almost EXACTLY when we conceived!!! Thanks to my fertility monitor!!

Congrats on the big news!!!

My first visit I had an internal exam followed by an internal sonogram where we saw the babys heart beat for the first time. I would definitly bring FH... We both cried when we saw her little heart chuggin away. They gave me a due date. Then my doc gave me a prescript for vitamins, LOTS of samples of vitamins and books and made my next monthly appointment. It was all so overwhelming I was told to continue on whatever I was doing before (just no sit ups) and we would discuss things further at my 2 month check up.

OMG! We haven't seen you around here is such awhile!!! How are you (besides pregnant!!!)??
COngratulations - I am so happy for you! Hope that you'll be around the Parenting board and keep us posted on your pregnancy...enjoy the next 10 months.

Congratulations!!!!! Like Kathi, I had an internal exam and v****al sonogram at 7 weeks to see if the heart was beating, plus did the urine, weight and went for blood and was given a bag of prenatal samples. I had to have another visit at 9 weeks because I had miscarried before, and at that one I had another v sonogram where we saw the baby and the heartbeat again, and then was given a prescription for the vitamins I liked and had more blood work done.

From what I've heard from other friends/family, each dr does something different.
