I was shopping near the new house today and I heard a kid crying, from a distance it sounded like the way a kid cries when they are not getting their way. I dont really know what transpired beforehand but the mother was with him, about 4 y.o., a daughter about 3 and a baby.
She was taunting her son!!!!!!!! He was crying over ? I dont know what and she kept egging him on with comments like 'Your a grump today' or 'Your being bad today' over and over and over and over. She was going up and down the aisles like I was so I kept running into her and she wouldnt let up with the boy. So the kid is wailing and crying 'Im not a grump' and she keeps saying 'Yes you are, your a grump'...and on and on. And he's crying and saying he's not and she keeps telling him he is. It took all the energy I had not to tell her to shut the F*%# up. I mean, she was clearly making the kid more upset. Sure to you & me, 'grump' isnt a horrible word but over and over to your 4 or 5 year old? Why? Even when he died down, it was like she wanted him to continue so she kept it up. It was really making me sick. I wanted to say something but I'm not getting in a fight with a stranger in front of my 10 month old child, whether he is aware or not. What a pathetic woman! I really feel sorry for her children.

Bride08 smoking while pregnant ???? I would smack that cigarette out of her **** hand! That makes me SICK !!! Selfish is an understatement !
Liz, I trust your opinion that the mom was antagonizing him, but maybe you'd wanna take a trip with my nieces 'At their best' and try 'ohhh soo hard' to hold your cool and be nice. They really are great kids, but as they say 'kids are kids' and every child acts up now and then..they know how and when to push buttons and we cant always say nicely (as 'those books' tell us to) 'Are you angry? Why are you angry? Can we discuss this?' To a certain point, yes we can talk out why a child is angry or whining, but if they are just simply being bratty that day, theres NO giving them the ball in their court. Ive been around way too many children to know that, it will only end up with you being stepped on... Im not saying to be mean to them but there's a point where mommy has to be mommy. Even Some of these kids I watch at the daycare, you can tell their moms are very 'oh sure, is that what you want to do, no problem' and they have an answer for everything, DO NO Listen, think they are boss and there is no reason why they cant do what they want....
sorry I rambled... I just think in SOME cases, the mom might be trying her best and just reached her boiling point. In your case, it does sound like that mom was overdoing it and pushing the kid's buttons.
Lets all try our best and hope our kids never act up

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
Anna, Believe me, I definitely have seen lots of kids pulling their tricks and I shudder at the thought of the day my little angel starts it. LOL! You & I both know our time is coming soon. But this was way overdone, you dont taunt your kid so he cries more. Terrible!
I know of 2 people who smoked while preggo - one was trying for awhile and using fertility drugs...and then she's smoking???! BTW, her child is healthy but she had placenta previa and a few other complications at the end. I'm shaking my head as I'm typing this.

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
Jenn's post took the words out of my mouth. I have seen so many cases of mothers who are really in need of a parenting class.

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
How horrible!!
I friend of mine continued to smoke when she was pregnant. She cut way down, but still kept smoking. I was horrified! I couldn't believe it. When someone asked her about it, and about how it can cause low birth weight you know what she said? 'Who wants a fat baby anyway?' NICE, huh?

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
I am happy to say that August 22 will be one year since I quit smoking. It was on that day that I found out I was pregnant and kissed my cigarettes good bye. I was a heavy smoker of 2 packs a day for over 10 years. Quit cold turkey and thank god have not gone back to it.............

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
I would never want to say anything to a mother or take part in the pregnancy police... we only witness a tiny snapshot of someone else's life... so in my opinion it's none of my business...

Re: What I witnessed in the supermarket today
I was on a business call with a freelancer the other day. Her 4 year old hit her in the face while she was on the phone. And the mom said 'stop hitting me. you are hurting me' the kid said, 'No I didn't even hurt you at all' and the mom said 'I told you not to hit me. It isn't nice to hit people'. Well this went on for a bit, while I was on the phone too. But let me tell you if my child hits me in the face on PURPOSE there is more than just 'stop it' in my house. The child would be in their room, no TV, no special toys, nothing. And forget dessert that night too. I don't believe in taunting as a form of behavior modification, but I am sure somedays that mom just feels at a lose.
