Our son is 6 months and his name is Jeremiah Joseph after my husband. My husband and I discuss having another next year, but he is insisting on naming the baby after his deceased father if it is a boy. The namae is not terrible, I jst don't like it personally. I feel that I named my first son after my husband and I should have a chance to name a boy too. I have planty of names I like too. His answer is I can name all of the girls! I am so frustrated b/c this will be the baby's name forever and I just really don't like it! What do you think? I hate to sound insensitive to his dad's memory but......

Re: what if you don't like a name?
What about using the first initial of his father's name. That is what we do in the Jewish religion. My grandmother passed away last year and her name was Ida. There was no way we were naming her Ida, so we used the first initial and named her Isabelle and her middle name is Victoria after my husbands grandfather Victor. It is a way you will both be happy.

Re: what if you don't like a name?
If you do have another boy maybe you could use his father's name or middle name for the baby's middle name, and then pick out a first name that YOU really like. I like Mindy's suggestion too about using the initial of the first name.
OR you can always put off the 'naming' discussion until you are 8 months pregnant, starting to get uncomfortable, and then blame it on hormones when you burst into tears because you don't want THAT name for your son How could he argue with you then?

Re: what if you don't like a name?
I just wanted to pop in and tell you that in my DHs family they all call eachother by their middles names.. weird I know- but for example his Dad's name is donald lee but calls himself jack- so when he signs things he signs them D.L. Jack .... so maybe you can use the first name your DH likes and call the child by his middle name?

Re: what if you don't like a name?
DH wanted to name Jeremy after his grandfather Nelson... I just couldnt do it. If he was going to be a girl he wanted to name her Adelade (sp?) I was like where the heck are you getting these names from. We arent in the 1920's anymore. I cant name my kid something that I hate. I know these people were important to you but seriously. He got the idea not to argue with a pregnant me and we chose a different name that still had meaning to him.

Same with us. I am catholic, but DH is jewish and his mother is insisting we name the baby after her father.... named Sol. No offense, but no way!!!! They have done so much for us, so we are going to use 's' for the middle name and hopefully that will be sufficient. In your situation, if you really dont like the name I would suggest alternatives to your DH with his fathers initals. Or maybe using his fathers first name as your son's middle name? Or your son having the same middle name as his father. I never agreed with the 'I name the boy and you name the girl' senario. Its both of your child, and you both should have a say in the naming.

Re: what if you don't like a name?
I believe that BOTH parents must like the names they chose for their child and that no one can be forced to name their child anything they don't want to. Grandparents cannot force a name on anyone...just tell them that they got to name their children, now it is your turn. And never discuss it again with them. I don't think that you should HAVE to name a child after someone...tell your husband that you will give him the middle name after his father or you will use the first initial but that he will have to work WITH you on the name this time.

Re: what if you don't like a name?
In my DH's family it tradition to name the first boy after your husbands father and the first girl after your husbands mother. Well before we found out the sex of our baby we had many a fights b/c I REFUSE to name my daughter his mothers name!!!! It very Italian, very weird, and I dont like it and know it would be one of those names that gets picked on.... his own mother dosent like her own name so why do that to a poor little baby!! Anyway it turns out we had a boy and I love his fathers name so I lucked out. We have discussed that if we have another child and it is a girl we will have to AGREE on a first name and even though it is long and will probably sound odd I agreed to put his mom's name as our daughters middle name. It was the best compromise we could come to.

I think you both have to like the name - esp the first name. Dh really wanted to name the baby his first name (also his dad'd first name) but I couldn't do it. We compromised and made it the middle name.

I have this one beat. My grandfather died before my parents got married, and my grandmother was rather insistant on me being named after him. His name was Hyman. THANK GOODNESS Mom and Dad just gave me the female form as a middle name and a normal first name to save on controversy.

Re: what if you don't like a name?
My friends husband's name is Frederick Robert after his grandfather. I guess they really didn't like Frederick because he's been called Robert or Bob his whole life. I only found out about his real first name when i got their wedding invite. Maybe if he is totally adament (sp) you could technically name the baby (if it's even a boy) after his late dad, but use his middle name in real life. Good luck!

LOL, that's my DH's name, well Peter anyway...John is my dad
Anyway, I agree with you about the name if he already picked the first one. What if you never have a girl? It's never your turn to pick a name?!

Re: what if you don't like a name?
I am having a similar problem, DH want to name the baby if its a boy Thomas the 3rd...its not that I don't like the name, I do....its just that my DH gets confused with his dad plus one of my SIL's is married to a Thomas.....I want my child to have its own identity and not have to get confused with his dad and grandfather.

Re: what if you don't like a name?
It doesnt have a great ring to it... and in saying that I must defend my reasoning not to offend anyone... Jeremys name is Jeremy Peter. I had to name him Peter because my dads name was Peter and I wanted to honor him in some way. Now my FIL wanted us to name him Peter Charles... which I hated so we stuck with Peter as a middle name.
You may need to compromise with your DH and maybe take one of the names as a middle name. My DH compromised for me
