What is a proof, really?

What is a proof, really?

This sounds like a dumb question, but I cannot find an answer. If I have asked it before, please forgive me. I am very confused

I am meeting with Duet next week, hopefully to book. I am looking to get one photographer for 9-10 hours and I am not getting books, just the pictures on a DVD/CD with full rights to print them anywhere. They have told me that the photog would take about 2000 pics but that I would have 600 proofs. What is the difference? Is a proof a picture that is edited in some way? Or is it just a small print?

I haven't decided if I want to print the pics somewhere else or if I want to have them print them for me, just to make it easier. I will be making my own books and will print the larger pics someplace else. But if I ask them to print me the proofs ... what will I be getting???

TIA to anyone that can solve the mystery for me!!!

Once they take all the pics there will be some that aren't any good because of lighting or it's blurry, whatever. After they remove all the bad ones you get your proofs. Proofs can be printed or on a DVD. You can tell them you want all the images whether they're good or not.

I was wondering the same thing. I looked it up on merriam online dictionary, it says 'a test photographic print made from a negative'

I know - I looked it up too! Completely NOT helpful, Ms. Merriam. Or Mr.

So proofs are anything that are good? Hmmm.

proofs are your pictures printed at a lower resolution than you would get in an album. Some companies give you proofs with their name across them so that you can't copy them. Duet doesn't do that, its really just a 4x6 photo (or at least it was last year!)
I got about 700 proofs, and about 2000 or so digital images on a DVD.

It could be as someone said that they expect to take 2000 pics but by the time they throw out what isn't any good you wind up with only 600.

I sort of doubt that is the case. Whay I think may be more like what Silver fox is doing with their pricing now. They will take unlimited pics and give them all to you on the dvds (or mybe throw out a few that are really not good). This could be towards 2000. Then if you want to have them print any as proofs you pay 30 cents per pic. Since they are not obligated to print all the pics they take as they formerly did they are freer to take a lot more pics, let you look at the dvds and pick what you may want them to print. It sounds like Duet is doing something similar but including 600 prints in their package. If this is the case I would ask them if you get to pick the 600 or do they pick what they think is the best.

i think is like a smaller verison of your pic, so that u can't copy it or anything like that, or its a bunch of little pics in a picture and u pick which ones you want

proofs are typically several small photos that aren't /cropped/color corrected etc. and used just for you to pick out what you want to be printed for reals... if you are just getting a cd of images I would ask them for ALL of your images as you might be able to do something with the blurry ones or the 'throwaways' just a thought.

your proofs are all the good pics... your other pics the negativs are alll the pics they took...
