It is at the end of the ceremony when the Bride and Groom (plus immediate family if you want) stand at the end of the aisle or church so that everyone can congratulate the couple.

Re: What is a receiving line?
I'm not sure if it's different outside of a church, but I know after the church ceremony the bride and groom and bridal party (I think) greet the guests in the lobby. The guests line up...to greet the B&G.

I've seen where just the B & G stand near the exit or entrance to the CH and greet everyone.
Also, they just greet everyone in the CH room itself, walking around

i like this idea. i feel like if we do a recieving line it will take away from me being able to enjoy CH food, which, after all is the thing iam most looking forward to

Re: What is a receiving line?
I'm getting married in a church, so I don't know for sure, but I've never seen a receiving line when the ceremony was at the reception hall.
