FMIL mentioned oh you are def having a rehersal dinner.. i was clueless...
i was in one wedding, and we had it bc of the church, procession, and how things would run at the RH... most of the time was at the church...
well we are not having a wedding at a church.. and we dont have far far OOT guests.. (NJ, staten isl.)
MOST if all of the OOT guests would be FIL's family from Argentina...
wouldnt it be up to FIL's to have a dinner for them and not both families combined...
and since my family is from NJ, SIsland, i feel that is alot of unecessary traveling... when there is a language barrier... it woudl be great for extended family to meet.. but they wont be able to communicate AT all...
so i ask... wouldnt it be FMIL to arrange a dinner for her family to keep them busy, and have me and FH there as well... and not have both families since they cant talk anyway?

Re: what is a rehersal dinner for? *kinda long*
I was wondering the same thing. I am having a wedding in Hawaii. I am going to try to have it at the Hilton Hawaiian Village where there is a chapel. We were going to quickly run through the prosession or whatever and then go see a luau with the New Yorkers. Hmmmm...

i always thought it was meant to be what it says.. a dinner after the rehersal for everyone to talk and relax together before the wedding

Im having trouble with this too. My problem is that our church does the rehearsal the morning of the wedding (horrible, I know!) so we wont all be together necessarilly the night before, so I dont have to feed them. But I do have a lot of OOT guests so I almost feel like I owe it to them.
Urghhhhhh.....FRUSTRATING!

A lot of people do rehearsal dinners now that is really just a dinner and not a rehearsal. I really don't understand the point but in judaism, rehearsal dinners are not very popular. We're running into a because FH is not jewish and wants to do a 'rehearsal' dinner. We agreed to just have the bridal party over for a bbq a few nights before the wedding. If they want to pretend they're walking down the aisle that's fine with me.

yeah for me i feel liek a nice dinner with the FULL BP woudl be great.. since the shower is all females... but a full out rehersal dinner when no one from his OOT guests speak a drop of english, i find to be REAL awkard.

Actually a rehearsal dinner is for those who went to the rehearsal and as a thank you to your bridal party for taking their time out to do all this and everything they have done you have a dinner to thank everyone...Also anyone besides your bp who will be at the rehearsal dinner.
Others also invite OOT guests who are in the area during the rehearsal.
Its not meant to invite everyone and your whole family, some people do this but not what its really supposed to be.
I wouldn't worry about inviting every family member on both sides.
You can do just your bp, grandparents, parents, very close family members you want there and if you don't have OOT guests then you dont have to worry about that
