What is hand canceling?

What is hand canceling?

Stupid question, but what exactly is 'hand canceling'? I always read about it but never quite knew what it was. Do you pay for this service?

It's when you or the postal worker hand stamps your invites (or anything else for that matter) so it doesn't go through a tough machine to get stamped (with the town name, date - circular stamp that covers part of the stamp which I assume 'cancels' the stamp's value .... showing it's been used). It is free and sometimes the post office refuses to do it, but mostly I've seen good responses on here. In Huntington, where I mailed my invites, I did it myself, took 10 mins. (I had 90 invites.)

If you're doing the hand canceling, do you stamp it over the stamps, or can you do it next to it? I don't want to stamp over my stamps.

It's something that the Camden Plaza Post Office in Brooklyn doesn't do because they're liars and are rude people!

(Part of a long story that I posted about before! )

Hand-canceling or hand-stamping is done so the invites aren't run through a machine and get damaged.

You have to stamp over the stamps----otherwise the stamps could be used again.

You have to get the stamp on at least a bit of your stamp - the corner is fine.
