What is the average......

What is the average wedding gift these days? I mean when I was looking for halls, i was surprised to see how cheap it can be. What's a sensible gift for...

A Close friend...
Family......
A friend who is not one of your best......

Do you mean that per person? or as a couple.

Re: What is the average......

If I am invited to a friends wedding with a guest (not someone whose bridal party I am in), I give $200, same as if a cousin of mine is getting married.

If it was a friend whose bridal party I am in, I would probably up it to $250 or a little more (with guest). If it is a brother/sister of mine, I would give at least $300 total for myself and guest.

If I am responding as a no, I would give $100 total.

I wish I could give more but I am not Rockefeller and have a mortgage to pay.

I recommend you give what you can afford to give.

HTH..

i pay for friend - 350
close friend - 450-500
family 600
sister or brother in future 2000

i pay for couple.

I try to cover how much they spend for the whole wedding per person, not what they spend pp on only the hall.

i was taught that you have to at LEAST cover your plate. i think after that it's at your descretion.

Sorry to quote your post... but I don't agree with the rule.

Assuming the plate charge is $175/pp that would be $350 per couple.

This is higher that I can afford in most cases. Especially if this is a coworker or acquaintance. And I am not going to try to call the hall or the bride to figure out how much she is paying per plate.

I pay what I can afford. I am assuming I am not invited to bring lots of $$$$$. But I try to do my best.

I usually give about $200 for a friend that is not a great one. (not always covering my plate) For cousins, I give $300. I gave $500 for my brother.

I always give about the same amount:

Me and FH for a friend: 300
Me and FH for a CLOSE friend: 500-800
Me and FH if we don't go to the wedding: 150
Me and FH and Kids : 500-800

hmmm...seeing what you ladies give, how many of u would like to come to my wedding? lol

we are right up there with you, but unfortunately i highly doubt his family will do more than 50 p/p from each person...so my family will typically over compensate but his family will make us fall short. oh well, that's the way it goes
