What is the most ounces...

a baby can eat? If it's an 8 oz bottle, there's no way you can pump that at one time. That would take a few times. It would take forever to get just one bottle!

I think a good estimate per feeding is 4 oz. I know this is stressful - thinking how you can pump enough to supply him with what he needs. You have to build up the supply and that's the only trick. In my case, I am still trying to build up, so I pump after feedings but honestly still only collect about 1 oz combined. I don't think I make very much milk. But I am home with Sophia, so whenever she wants, we nurse, and I am noticing that she wants to be supplemented less and less, so I think I am at least making more in the long run.

The fact of the matter is a lot of women have to supplement with formula while they build up their supply. I think Michele knows quite a bit on this topic, and she also knows great links to breastfeeding support groups that might help you. I can say that I dont' know the 100% frustration, because I give her formula when I am 'out' of milk. I have never collected enough to make a feeding out of it.

I'm not sure about how much it is when you are bf'ing. I do know that it didn't take Ryan long after I weaned him to start taking 8 oz. bottles of formula - he still takes them occasionally but now he usually maxes at around 6 oz. because he is also eating solid food. I know it is hard to tell when you are pumping/bf'ing...I'm sure some of the other ladies can help you estimate better.

Melissa, typically when a baby starts on 8oz bottles they are also on some food so you don't need to make 64oz of bm per day.

Stress will lower your supply and since you are keeping up with Caiden's needs right now there is no need to stress yet. You need to increase supply with pumping. Like Jenny, she deouble pumps after each feeding for 15 minutes. You don't have to collect milk during this time. Its purpose is to tell your body to make more milk and it will respond shortly after.

I go on Pumping Moms on Yahoo everyday. It helps me to get support from other women who do this and have been successful at it too.

I agree that when they take 8 oz. bottles they are usually eating some solids. I do not think they ever 'need' more than 36 oz. a day. I am guessing that 32 oz. or (4) 8 oz. bottles with food will be enough for Caiden by the time he is on jarred food.
