What is the story with cakes? Please help.

I've seen a number of posts about cakes given to the groom at the rehersal dinner. They seem to be really fancy and usually reflect something the groom is interested in.
What can anyone tell me about this? Is this a new tradition or something? I like the idea...Just want to learn more. Thank you.

the grooms cake is actually a southern tradition where a 2nd cake (usually rich chocolate) is at the wedding alongside the main cake and then sliced and boxed for the guests to take home with them. Now people tend to have the grooms cake at the RD and it can be anything you want - I'm getting an Ice Cream cake for my FH's Grooms Cake.

The Groom's Cake is an old, Southern, wedding tradition. Not sure where it came from or why, but in the south they have a wedding cake and then a groom's cake.

I guess around these parts, they've taken on the tradition with a twist and have had the Groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner.

It usually reflects the groom's personality/interests.

I didn't have a grooms cake but I made the cake topper to reflect my DH's taste. I got Homer and Marge Simpson and painted them to be a bride and groom. Everyone loved it!!

I had a grooms cake in the shape of NY Giants helmet with the logo on the side...my DH is HUGE fan. I had it at the rehersal dinner as a surprise. He loved it. I used Create a Cake in Port Jeff Station if your out that way.

Having a groom cake would be an awesome idea.

I haven't decided if we're having the groom cake at the reception or the rehersal dinner. But I definitely would like to have one made in the shape of a guitar, considering he loves to play...
