I am sewing my father's World War II dog tag inside of my dress. He is an American hero and he is my hero.
Wow, this is so special. Its the best 'something old' I've heard of.
Thank you. My father's service in the army was something he was so incredibly proud of. This is one of the best ways I can think to honor him.

Re: What is(was) your 'something old'?
My FI's grandmother gave me the purse she carried on her wedding day. I will also wear the bracelet my mom gave to my aunt when she was my mom's MOH. My mom has passed away, and I was named after my aunt ('our' name is engraved on the bracelet) -- tons of sentiment!

Re: What is(was) your 'something old'?
I have a six pence coin from England which my Grandmother gave to my mother for her wedding, who gave it to my sister, who gave it to me. So it also qualifies as something borrowed I suppose. The coin is supposed to be carried for good luck (and my Grandmother joked that it was also given to brides so they could take transportation home if their husband turned out to be awful).
Maybe ask your family if there is something like that which has been passed down. If not, jewelry would be good.

My dad had a little gold ring from the 1940s when he was a baby, and I wore it as a toe ring
