What Joyous Day!!! My sister (half) reconnected with me.
I met my sister when she was 6months old. I've never seen her since. My mother had her a few months after my parents divorce was final...
The day I moved to NYC I reconnected with my mother's family. Through that reconnection I sent a letter to my sister.. sorta opening the doors. It was nice. Then my Dear old Wacky Psycho Mother came out to play, if you will. Things got nasty. Bad vibes ended with me saying something VERY stupid and paying the price. Judy (my sister) stopped talking to me (fully earned that one).
9/11 happened, we reconnected briefly but as you know my Mom said a few nasty things ..(well just one 'I know you were there, I just don't care'..) and so communication stopped again.
Skip this week. Got an email from her and got pics!! So cool having a little sister. She'll be 18 in a month!!! My god Im getting old!
I just WISH I was half as good looking as her!! She knows Im getting married...
Shame I can't invite her

Sounds good that you reconciled - it a shame that she can't be at your wedding - families are very complicated sometimes

Are you not inviting her because of your mother? Do what you want. If your mother is going to raise hell, then she can do it on her own. You have a sister and it would be great to share your special day with her

Why can't you invite her?
My mother was abusive when I was a child. We have tried to work things out and it has failed. She's a freak, my mother. If I were to invite my sister to my wedding my mother would say she had to come for the sake of my sister. My mother is most definately banned from the wedding. We have several family members warned that if she arrives she is to be escorted out. The M'D will have instructions as well.
My mother has been known to stalk my brother to get a chance to see him. She has told me several times she doesnt love me and wishes I wasn't born, plus she tried to commit suicide while pregnant with me, but she LOVES my brother. My brother, bless him, says we come as a package, he & I. With that, it is known she can not see her son or grandson without first dealing with me.
Knowing her.. she'll stalk out the hotel where everyone is and basically became a nightmare. Something my poor sister has never seen. Most of our drama occurred before she was born. Judy's lived a life of priviliage and comfort. I really don't want to cause her harm or embarassment by having a confrontation between my mother and .. well just about everyone.
So to avoid all trouble.. my sister nor my mother are invited. *sigh*
And you thought YOU had it bad with family! haha

But won't Judy be turning 18 soon and could come to your wedding on her own?
I guess I am such a naive peacemaker, I just wish there was a way for her to be here without your mom.

Me too But being 18 doesnt really mean 'free'.
I am still trying.. but she'll be in college when during the wedding. Perhaps she'll take some time? But I'd have to pay for the flight and stay since there's no other way for my mother not to know.
As much as I want my sister there, I still feel guilt at going behind my mother's back for this. I know I owe her no alligence and no favors but I don't want my sister to be in a position that makes her choose between lying to her mother about her long lost sister or being unfortunately innocent enough to tell her mother but cause an nasty scene in the process.
Im still going to try. We shall see.. but the outlook isnt good.

No matter what, keep in touch. She's your blood. It would be interesting to see if you share any personality traits or allergies or other things siblings share

I'm sorry your sister won't be able to come but its great that you were are able to reconnect. As she gets older you will probably be able to have a better relationship since your mother will have less influence. Good luck, I hope it works out.
