Re: What knife set?
FH loves to cook and totally wanted to pick out all kitchen items (knives, pots, pans etc). After literally a 35 minute conversation with someone at BBB and then a 15 minute conversation with someone at macys here is what we decided on:
We were told by both stores, that Henckels and Wusthof are the best knife brands We got clarification though that they both have a cheaper version made in China and their higher end brand made in Germany (i think that is where but i may be mistaken)...which is why you will see some sets include more but are cheaper (they are made in china so the quality isnt as good). I dont recall how to tell the differnce with the Wushof brand, but for Henckles, the 'twin' knives are made in Germany (or wherever) and the others are made in china). you can read the description or simply look at the logo (one is one man and the twin is two men).
If you dont care as much about knives you can go with the set that is made in china bc they are all covered by warranty but if you are picky (like fh) then go for the more expensive set. I will admit though you can tell the difference between the two sets and the twin has a better blade.
sorry i rambled on hth

Re: What knife set?
We wound up picking individual knives - I think I picked like 5 knives that I would actually use, and I liked different brands of different knives, so that worked best for me. Some are Wusthof, the santoku I liked best was Calphalon. I was concerned about not having a block to keep the blades safe in, but we found a bamboo in-drawer knife block that lays flat and holds them all.

Re: What knife set?
henckels is def the best!
we already have a block
but we registered for the small set of steak knives by henckels
that's a lot of money to spend on a knife set that doesnt' work well
but my best friend registered for each calphalon katana knife individually and she loves them - she got the Zwilling J.A. Henckels Magnetic Bracket to have them accessible and no need for a knife block cluttering her counter

Re: What knife set?
I registered for Calphalon - I personally love Calphalon and they have good reviews.
