Hey T how are you? I can't help you with the DJ part since I didn't look (but from personal experience attending weddings I have noticed some were better at mixing music to accomadate all ages with popular songs that everyone no matter what age wanted to dance - I think dj's are harder to find b/c you really have to go by personal recommendations as to whether guests really loved him or not.
Bands are a bit easier - we listened to a TON of cd's, videos and heard a number of them live (some from weddings we attended in the past and remembered) - that was much easier - but honestly I think picking a band is very subjective - I have a musical background so I was rather picky about my band - I will tell you we heard showcases where the band was NOT hitting the right notes and that really gratted on my nerves. As you see and hear these different bands some will hit you more than others will - We actually heard some bands that got good reviews that my ULTRA conservative grandparents and parents PUT TO SLEEP and thought were more appropriate for a 80th birthday party. I also found price didn't make much of a difference some of the most expensive bands were not nearly as good as some much cheaper ones were.
One suggestion a number of people offerred to me - was to look for a band NOT thru an agency but thru the band itself - I noticed that some bands you can book thru directly and not go thru a company which would charge MUCH more than going thru the bandleader directly

Someone that knows what to play and how to keep the party going. We told our dj to play a few certain songs and what style music we wanted.We left the rest up to him. That is his job. If they are really good, they know what the crowd wants to hear and what is making everyone get up and dance. If someone gives them a huge list and doesn't let them play anything else even if nobody is happy, the party will die out.

T...be very careful when you are booking your band. You are going to want one with a lot of energy that keeps your party going full force. You also have to make sure you get one with a very capable MC, and capable replacements should the people you hire not show up the day of the wedding (which is ALWAYS a possibility...as I learned). See the band more than once, twice or three times if possible. Don't jump to book. Investigate the company, make sure they have a great reputation, ask them how many parties they play a day (this is really important because it will tell you if you stand a chance at getting the band you see, or the offshoot members they throw in when they work 2 parties a day).
The contract with a band guarantees NOTHING but the amount of time they play, how long the sets are, how many pieces you get, and the price and overtime costs. It does not guarantee which singers you get, which guitarist..nothing.
If I were you, I'd check out Renegade, A Current Affair, Paris, The Projekt, Ric Mango, and Vali Music (in NJ, but go everywhere, they are AMAZING). They have awesome reps, have fantastic leads and replacements.

Definetly check out showcases...and go on the word of people you trust - or from weddings that you yourself have been to. You want a band or DJ that will keep the people on the dance floor and listen to your requests. Also request cd's and/or video tapes from the bands you're interested in...
We chose our band based on 3 people's weddings...FHs brother, his sister and a cousin that tried to book him, but he wasn't available so they wound up going with Ron James.
Best of luck to you...imo, the music is one of the most important things at a wedding (following closely behind the food)...it's not an easy decision.

The band contract DOES state the singers, instruments,time, etc...you just have to ask for it to be put on the contract...

It really depends on your taste. If you like the songs exactly as they sound on the cd or radio, you might prefer a dj. A band gives the crowd something to actually look at too. I was leaning more towards a dj because of the type of music I like, but FH really wanted a band. We went with a band that does mostly bars and clubs which is more our style. A lot of wedding bands play the same songs form what I saw at showcases.

I dont know what to look for when searching for a band..i got lucky and already know my band..but with a DJ..I know certain people want certain things..some like when the DJ's motivate the crowd and hand out big glasses, etc..I just want a DJ who will play the songs I like and not bother the crowd..I know when my sister was looking, she was about to go off of a recommendation and when she went and saw him in real..he was really cheesy and not what she wanted for her wedding. So I think its personal style. I dont know if this is helpful or not..i hope it is..![]()

Missmmpr, my contract said every name of every band member, and only 4 out of the 9 showed up. It means NOTHING because they are protected by the contract anyway because bands are human and crap happens.

wow that must of shocked you...Doesn't it have to be like a serious illness or death? i don't think they can just not show up..My contract says only by uncontrollable circumstances may the band members change...

Missmmpr uncontrollable circumstances really can mean anything - it can mean they had to stay home b/c their kid was sick, it can mean that their car broke down - basically it means they can replace the person if for some reason they can't be there. Unfortunately you don't have that much recourse unless they replace them with someone who is inferior to the person you booked.
But any way you look at it 2, 3, 4 etc people who are different is NOT good - and no matter what the reason anyone would be upset by that. But it obviously happens fairly frequently b/c I can name at least 3 girls on here who that has happened to -

yes, it happened to one of my friends, i posted about it a while ago. at her wedding only like 4 of the members were there that she recognized! seriously, no matter what they say or put on the contract, there is a loop hole, sad but true.

we are using the band current affair they have a website www.currentaffairmusic.com anyway my fiance went to a wedding with his mother and was blown away by this band they played frank sinatra and opera during dinner. he said that everyone stood up and clapped. so we booked them. i know they are playing at jones beach on july 21st i saw it on the website. plus john was so helpful and accomodating. good luck to you.
