A duvet is just a plain white comforter without a covering of any sort. A duvet cover is what you put over it. Makes it much easier to do laundry because you just take the cover off and chuck it in the wash.

I didn't register for one but, I have one. I bought it to change the style of my comforter.

I prefer duvets in rooms that are going to be used a lot because you can change the look anytime you want and not worry about dry cleaning. We'll probabaly use a duvet in the master bedroom but for our guest rooms we registered fo comforter sets.

I did exactly as susan described. I have three bedrooms, registered (and got) and duvet and cover for the master bedroom!

With regard to practicality, I'd say yes and no.
I love the fact that I can change the look of our bedding/bedroom just by switching duvet covers. And that I don't have to wash the down comforter, just remove the cover and wash that.
However, one thing I miss about just having a comforter or duvet without a cover is not having to deal with the shifting of the blanket inside the cover. We are always losing the end of the blanket in the middle of the cover! I guess its not a huge deal, just shake it to the other end -its good to fluff up the down every now and then anyway.
Edited to say - like the others, I got quilt sets for the other bedrooms. Duvet and cover for ours only.

Hi!!!!!!!!
I highly recommend duvet covers because I've spent plenty o' penny dry cleaning my comforters ($40 a pop).
But it's key to get the snaps (I'm not sure what they're called) that hold the comforter in place inside the cover. They actually have them at BB&B, so tell John to zap those!

Re: What on earth is a....
Hi again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you could do (if you want) is get a comforter with a print, matching shams, ruffles, etc.
And then separately get a plain white comforter with a duvet cover (or more than 1 cover). If you really want to maximize the whole verstaility of a duvet cover, you should get a set of neutral ruffles and shams so that you're not getting another set every time you get a duvet. Know what I mean? Hope this makes sense. I'll show you what I mean when you come over on Sunday. :-)

Re: What on earth is a....
we got a duvet cover and use it on a regular paterned comforter. As a word of warning for some reason it made our comforter a ton warmer, so sometimes it gets too hot...
