Re: What reading did you use?

We had my cousin read a poem from an unknown author....here it is:

What is Marriage?
Marriage is a promise that two hearts gladly make,
A promise to be tender, to help, to give and take.
Marriage is a promise to be kind and understanding,
To be thoughtful and considerate, fair and undemanding.
Marriage is promise to share ones life together,
A love filled promise meant to be kept lovingly forever.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Here are some others I came across when looking :

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians (12:31-13:8)
Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offence, and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes. Love does not come to an end.

What is Love?
by Susan Polis Schutz
Love is the strongest feeling known
an all -encompassing passion
an extreme strength
an overwhelming excitement
Love is trying not to hurt the other person
trying not to change the other person
trying not to dominate the other person
trying not to deceive the other person
Love is understanding each other
listening to each other
supporting each other
having fun with each other.
Love is not an excuse to stop growing
not an excuse to stop making yourself better
not an excuse to lessen one's goals
not an excuse to take the other person for granted
Love is being completely honest with each other
finding dreams to share
working towards common goals
sharing responsibilities equally
Everyone in the world wants to love
Love is not a feeling to be taken lightly
Love is a feeling to be cherished, nurtured and cared for
Love is the reason for life

From This Day Forward
From this day forward, let us laugh together, and plan together,
let us find our favorite places, and go together...
Let us enjoy the sunshine, and the rain,
being alone together, and in crowds together...
From this day forward, together,
Let us love!

Blessings For A Marriage
~ James Dillet Freeman ~
May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a marriage should bring, and may life grant you also patience, tolerance, and understanding.
May you always need one another - not so much to fill your emptiness as to help you to know your fullness. A mountain needs a valley to be complete; the valley does not make the mountain less, but more; and the valley is more a valley because it has a mountain towering over it. So let it be with you and you.
May you need one another, but not out of weakness.
May you want one another, but not out of lack.
May you entice one another, but not compel one another.
May you embrace one another, but not out encircle one another.
May you succeed in all important ways with one another, and not fail in the little graces.
May you look for things to praise, often say, 'I love you!' and take no notice of small faults.
If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope to have good sense enough to take the first step back.
May you enter into the mystery, which is the awareness of one another's presence - no more physical than spiritual, warm and near when you are side-by-side, and warm and near when you are in separate rooms or even distant cities. May you have happiness, and may you find it making one another happy.
May you have love, and may you find it loving one another.

Excerpt from The Bridge Across Forever
(Richard Bach)
A soul mate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we're pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we're safe in our own paradise. Our soul mate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we're two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we've found the right person. Our soul mate is the one who makes life come to life

What Is Love~
Author Unknown ~
Sooner or later we begin to understand that love is more than verses on valentines and romance in the movies. We begin to know that love is here and now, real and true, the most important thing in our lives. For love is the creator of our favorite memories and the foundation of our fondest dreams. Love is a promise that is always kept, a fortune that can never be spent, a seed that can flourish in even the most unlikely of places. And this radiance that never fades, this mysterious and magical joy, is the greatest treasure of all - one known only by those who love.

Celtic Wedding Blessing
May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace.
May your troubles grow few as your blessings increase.
Be no worse than the happiest day of your past.
May your hands be forever clasped in friendship
And your hearts joined forever in love.
Your lives are very special,
God has touched you in many ways.
May his blessings rest upon you
And fill all your coming days.

These I Can Promise
Author Unknown
I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old.
But I can promise all my heart's devotion;
A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow;
A love that's ever true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow.

True Love
Author Unknown
True love is a sacred flame
That burns eternally,
And none can dim its special glow
Or change its destiny.
True love speaks in tender tones
And hears with gentle ear,
True love gives with open heart
And true love conquers fear.
True love makes no harsh demands
It neither rules nor binds,
And true love holds with gentle hands
The hearts that it entwines

Our Love
Bruce B. Wilmer
Our love is something we have built
From passions, hopes and dreams.
It's safe from any passing moods,
Secure from all extremes.
It's something real and special,
Something solid, something pure.
It's something we can always count on,
ringing sound and sure.
It's something grounded in the heart,
Emitting confidence.
It lives in our emotions;
It is something we can sense.
Our love remains a binding force,
Resistant to all strife.
Amidst the outer pressures,
it's our anchor throughout life.

Today I Married My Best Friend
Rachel Elizabeth Cooper (b.1977)
Today I married my best friend,
Our bond complete, it hath no end,
We share one soul, we share one heart,
A perfect time - a perfect start.
With these rings we share together,
Love so close to last forever,
This special day - two special hearts,
Let nothing keep this love apart

Re: What reading did you use?

It was SO HARD to find readings that were fun and cute and didnt use the words 'sacrifice'. I thought that was an awful word to include in a ceremony.

This is one I had:
Marriage Means Being In Love for the Rest of Your Life - Chris Ardis

Marriage is love walking hand in hand together.

It is laughing with each other about silly little things, and learning to discuss big things with care and tenderness.

In marriage, love is trusting each other when you’re apart.

It is getting over disappointments and hurts, knowing that these are present in all relationships.

It is the realization that there is no one else in this world that you would rather be with than the one you are married to.

It is thinking of new things to do together.

It is growing old together.

Marriage is being in love for the rest of your life.

Re: What reading did you use?

We used excerpts from 1) 'Marriage Joins Two People in the Circle of Its Love,' 2) Goodrich v. Department of Health (2003), the ruling that gave gays the right to marry in Massachusetts (applicable to straight relationships too), and 3) an English language, contemporary version of the seven blessings, a Jewish tradition (DH is Jewish).

Here is a link for many wedding secular readings and poems (including the O'Neill).

Law ruling:

'The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support. Marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family….It fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life's momentous acts of self-definition.'

Seven blessings:

'May your marriage be as sweet as the fruit of the vine. May you work together to build a relationship of substance and quality. May the honesty of your communication build a foundation of understanding, connection and trust. May you respect each other’s individual personality and philosophy, and give each other room to grow and fulfill each other’s dreams. May your sense of humor and playful spirit continue to enliven your relationship. May you understand that neither of you is perfect: you are both subject to human frailties; and may your love strengthen when you fall short of each other’s expectations. May you continue to be ‘best friends,’ better together than either of you are apart.'
