In a church ceremony, is there a side that the bride is traditionally on?
I ask because I was thinking of doing a birdcage veil with a flower fascinator on one side. I would obviously want it to be on the side facing the photographer.

The bride stands on the left side of the groom so it would probably be better if the flower was on your left side so it will be on the outside!!

If I am in the church pew looking at the altar, I've always seen the bride on the left side

I thought it was the left, but I didnt know if that was always the case.
However, if I am standing at the altar, facing the groom, wouldnt I want it on my right side so it faces the photographer, or am I confused?

Yup, you're right side. So when you face the groom the right side of your head would be facing the guests and photog.

That is interesting because for me we stand on the right side. It has always been like that. Wonder why?
