What the heck is satellite radio?

What the heck is satellite radio?

I want to get this for FH's car, but I don't understand what it is. Is it something that has to be installed into the console, or is it an external device? If it's external, can it also be used at home? Whatever it is, where do I go to buy it?

Sorry to be so techno-ignorant.

Yes I am pretty sure it is like a regular cd deck or radio deck so you have to have it installed. You can buy it at Best Buy that is where I have seen it. You can buy a little stereo for inside your house also that you take the face off the car stereo and it works inside your house. There is a monthly fee for it. It's called XM radio

We have it in our new SUV....it is okay, but HE LOVES it....I think it is $9.95 a month (do we really have to pay for radio??)...I would rather pay for the On*Star, not the XM.

We just got XM Satellite radio last night.

We purchased the face plate, the car adaptor & the boom box.

The car adaptor is plugged into your tape deck & power source (ciggy lighter). There is an antannae that you run from the back of the roof of the car into the car. If you don't have a tape deck, you can get a special adaptor to plug the unit into a second power source (with a splitter if you only have one).

The boom box is just that - no antanne needed. It runs on batteries or ac cord.

The faceplate can be moved from the boom box to the car dock.

The subscription is 9.99 a month for commercial free radio nationwide.

There is also a Sirius network which works basically the same way except the car dock unit appears to be easier to install. Their service is slightly higher per month, but if you pay a year in advance it works out to be the same.

The prices of the units are comprable.

XM radio is AWESOME. Ive had it for two years now. There is no comparison between satellite radio and the monotany you hear on FM.

Satellite radio is great if you like specific 'genres' of music... like strictly 80s, 90s, disco, dance, hiphop, country, rock, jazz, latin, etc. XM has multiple dedicated channels for each of those types of music, as well as four 'top40s' style stations.

Once you go satellite radio... you cannot EVER listen to FM again.

As far as equipment goes.... most new cars come with radios that are already enabled for satellite radio (either XM or Sirius). All you have to do is get the serial number of the unit and call and activate the service.

Older cars (pre-2002 probably)... you need to buy equipment for it. Either a separate tuner that plugs into your cassette deck or antenna lead.
