Granted these are all things I'm doing...........but they're definitely not necessary.
Laura you are so funny I was just reading down your list going: did that, did that, did that, did that, yep did em all! But again, it all comes down to each person's taste, budget, and style!!!

I think a guest book is unnecessary ... i think most people (myself included) hate writing in them anyway

any of that personalized stuff like matchbooks and coctail napkins.
Instead of doing individual menus you could maybe just have one in the center of each table or not do any at all. At my SIL wedding there were no menus and the Salad and Appetizer were the same for everyone and the waiter just told us our choices for entree.
Don't do placecard holders - the suckers can wind up costing you a pretty penny if you have a lot of guests.

favors. I think they're a really nice touch, but I can only think of one favor that I've kept (a bottle of wine).

I think it's important to have favors ... but i agree that it shouldn't be a throw-away thing ...
we're making a donation to the World Wildlife Fund and then giving each person a little scroll that tells them that their favor is a donation. It's nice and cute and good (and tax deductable )

this is kind of a stupid question but what exactly are slipper baskets and cry packs?
i can ASSUME what they are ... but you know what happens when you assume

Wedding sign in book (Never opened mine) Personalized menus (i had mine done felt it was so unnecessary afterward because I throw them all away) Save the dates ( I won them but otherwise I wouldn't do it) Personalized cocktail napkins Slipper baskets Personalized cardbox Bathroom baskets
Granted these are all things I'm doing...........but they're definitely not necessary.

I didn't mean to insult anyone. I would love to do all these things too but I really have to find a way to cut back. Its starting to get stressful and FH is the only one working . I don't want to cancel my wedding a couple months away so I am trying to find ways to cut.

I was thinking of cutting out favors. I guess you can call the black cake a favor and just get a box to put them in.

I did all of the above as well... but if you are trying to cut back these are all things that can go. also cry packs (I'm personally not a huge fan of them anyway) and specialized linens are also very expensive. I think if youn cut back on A LOT of little things, it adds up to a savings... but if you cut back on one or two of the little things, you might not save all that much.
Also make sure you get your pics on a disk... and rather than paying a butt load for albums from your photog (esp the parent albums) get them elsewhere using the disk! that could save a bunch all in one shot.

i think expensive invites are a waste of money. as well as napkins , escort cards(most RH provide something) menus(but i want them) programs(not doin it) slipper baskets(no way) and cry packs(again no way) matches(im gonna do this also), very expensive shoes, very expensive flowers, and just figure out what you wanna spend and keep looking... all my vendors tell me with the economy that you can get som great deals(and i think i have!) good luck

Re: What things do you feel is not necessary
I've also been cutting back, here's what I've been up to during my hiatus from LIW:
1. I re-negotiated my RH contract by lowering the guaranteed minimum, then I cut the guest list..lol (hey, whatever works!) I also cut out the VH, we have 4 dessert options and the wedding cake
2. Was doing menus and programs, they're out
3. DIY my invites, placecards and holders (Michaels always has a sale and I'll just make the time)
4. Simplified the centerpieces
5. Changed the limo plans (though my plans are still not finalized)
If you haven't said yes to the dress yet, consider that expense and don't go crazy with it. DOJ also shouldn't cost a bundle.
