What to ask my gyno?

What to ask my gyno?

We are not ready to TTC yet. Thinking maybe next summer but I have my semi-annual appt tonight and figure I should ask my gyno some questions.

1) when to stop my birth control
2)about pre-natals

Is there anything else specifically I should discuss with her?

I don't know if you need to discuss this with your gyno, but maybe you want to begin keeping a monthly journal - just so you can keep track of your Aunt Flo visits while you are preparing to TTC...this way, if you run into any difficulties, you'll have some recent monthly histories to re-visit. Just an idea....I am having some ovulation issues myself, and I've been keeping a journal for next year when we (hopefully) will be TTC again.

This might be obvious (since it's your annual exam), but she'll be doing a pap test, right? As long as that comes back normal, I can't think of anything else you should be asking about (until of course you're pregnant!) Then there's a whole other list!

But, you might want to discuss some basics of prenatal care, too....and what hospitals you'll have a choice of delivering at...just in case you want to explore other options.

Although not every OB/GYN tests for it, I was tested for the Rubella antibodies. If I didn't have them, I would have been given the vaccine. This should be done at least 3 months before TTC incase you need the vaccination.
Some things I read say to have blood tests done as well, but my office did not do them.

Thanks Claud. I am keeping a log. I learned that from the girls here.

Here is a dumb question. What is Rubella?

What about Rh factor? Do they test that pre-conception?? I know some of the prenatal blood tests include Rubella, Rh factor, & HIV. I also think the Pap will include a test for Group B Strep.

Funny, I don't really know. I associated it with Chicken pox and measles though if that helps at all.
It's dangerous for the baby if you contract Rubella while PG.

You should make sure you are up to date on your vaccines. I had to get some when we went to Africa for our HM and so did DH. I think we all tend to think of those as a childhood thing, but there are booster shots for adults.
Also, start to think if you want this to be the doctor you see when you are pregnant, like Claud said.
Start taking your folic acid soon, as it is very important for future baby.

do any dental work before TTC & a full physical

Re: What to ask my gyno?

Already taking Folic acid or (baby acid) as Matt calls it. He brings it to me every night so I don't forget!

God, He wants a baby so bad.....it is very cute and he is willing to be patient.

I will ask about the shots. Dental work I am having now. Not by choice

My gyno is a nurse practioner so I will need to have a different doc when we get PG. I will have to start thinking of that. You ladies are the best!!!

Jen- If you get a chance after your appointment, I would be interested to hear what if any part your Nurse Practicioner will/can play in your pregnancy.
I've been going to a NP that I really like for more tahn 5 years, and I have been wondering how involved she can be when and if I become PG.

Thanks-

Re: What to ask my gyno?

I will. I love mine as well. I am very sad that she couldn't be the one to actually deliver my baby!!!!! But I will put that on my list of questions to ask.

NPs can't deliver babies? I like them so much better than MDs...they spend more time with you and they just have a better bedside manner...I planned to go to a NP or a PA here in CA(as I went to one in LI)...but maybe I have to rethink

Some NP do deliver babies if they are Certified Nurse Midwives. It depends...

Re: What to ask my gyno?

So I am back from the gyno and here is what she had to say.

Off the BC 2 months before. I guess all doctors have their opinion on this. I may do this earlier but the longer I can stay on the better for my cramps!!!

Take regular vitamins for now they have what I need. Extra Folic acid is really only needed is a history of Spinal Bif(I am not going to try and spell) in the family. She will start me on pre-natals when the time comes.

Other than that she said I don't need to do anything.

As for who I would see in their office. She would see me throught my pregnancy (as would the OBGYN in the office) HE would do the actual delivery. She does not do that. He delivered both of her babies and she said he is great. I guess the decision would have to be if I am comfortable with that. I guess it is no different than switching offices now and starting a repoire with new doc there. At least I will have my NP throughout my entire pregnancy and will build a repoire with thre OBGYN.

Re: What to ask my gyno?

Thanks for the report Jen. I'm happy to hear that your NP can be involved throughout your pregnancy.
I'm not sure how I feel about sort of switching for the big event though..... My next appointment will be next month and I will discuss the options with my NP before deciding. I know the office also has 2 midwives, that I may consider as well.

Thanks again!
