My best friend will be laid off on Friday after 13 years of working at the same company. She lives at home still and is getting an awesome severance package, so money is not an immediate concern, but I wanted to get her something little... any suggestions?

I would say a Gift certificate for her fav. clothing store..She will need money and new clothes for job interviews, and since Im sure she cant afford new clothes, it would lift her spirits. I would say a Grocery store GC too, but if she lives at home, that might not help...or a CD or something she can listen to to help her be happy? Or a new day planner to help stay organz=ized as she looks for new jobs? Those are things I'D want if it happened to me.

I was laid off on April 4th
No great servance package but I wasn't suffering (yet)
I really could have gone for a hair cut and a new suit to get me to feel 'fresh' out in the job market. Also if she's not done her resume in a while, there's services out there to help out and they cost a little but worth a lot. Might want to help out with that?
just some ideas
On a personal level maybe a nice lunch out. Sometimes just a chance to sit and vent out some steam is REALLY helpful. You feel so useless when youre laid off. You did nothing wrong and weren't trying to quit and now your without a job, it's a really odd feeling.

My friend got laid off right before her birthday & at the time she lived in Bayside, so for her birthday I got her a LIRR off-peak 10 trip ticket so she could come into the city for interviews or just to go out, etc.
If she doesn't take the train, you can also get gift cards for gasoline.
another friend got her a starbucks gift card, since she probably wouldn't splurge on that while she wasn't working.
Gift cards for hair cuts/ makeup/nails /clothes are good ideas too.
