What to do!?! Cake dilemma!

What to do!?! Cake dilemma!

So I fell in love with this cake:

I received a quote of $1300 from one of the top NY cake creators.

I visited the baker that is included in my contract to show them the cake and to see if it could be made and their reaction was . (That made me nervous.) They said they could do it and it would cost us $500.

My fear is that we'll spend the $500 and I'll end up hating their re-creation of the cake. My FH thinks it's insane to spend $1300 on a cake. I kinda' agree with him even though I love that cake so much.

So, do I:
1. Let the contract baker make the cake and keep my fingers crossed?

2. Do I beg my FH to let me go with the baker who charges an 'arm & leg', but I know can definitely do it?

or

3. Do I go with this cake but customize the colors to coordinate with my gown:

(champagne/light blush colored fondant with off-white or pearlized dots & copper colored swags)

I love the cake you really want, but I'd go woth cake #3 so you feel better.
Who needs more wedding stress?
# 3 is gorgeous too Jenny!

WOW. That is some cake! Personally I would not let them do it (if they don't have a picture they have made like it) You don't need any dissapointments on your wedding day. If you go to the expensive baker you will get what you want but HOLY COW...I would NEVER spend that much on a cake.

I personally like the second one. Sorry if it's not what you want to hear. So my answer is #3

I found a picture of a cake that was $700 to make...i brought it to my halls baker...and he was so into it...it didn't turn out exactly like the picture (be prepared for that), but it came out pretty **** good...

he also didn't charge me the extra...b/c he was going to put it in his book of pictures and so it was like practice for him...

I actually like #3 better...plus less stress, less $$...

I like 3 better, too.

I also like #3 better - to me, the top cake looks so much like fabric it does not look appetizing.

But there is a 4th option - ask them what they would charge for just doing one layer as a test - maybe for $75 or so they would do the small top layer to show they can get close to what you want. Then you could get what you really want if it works, or if not, you know you won't be disappointed on your big day. In fact, ask them if they'd do the test for $35 and see what they say.

my guess is that you will be nervous about it ifyou let the included caterer do the cake. I would go the safe route and get the other cake. It is lovely.

I also like the 2nd cake better. so I would go with choice #3.

I like the 2nd cake better too!

I like the second cake! The cake you originally picked seems VERY DIFFICULT to make - and if these bakers don't have the practice - I wouldn't want my wedding to be their first try!

Being that the cake you really want is so unique I wouldn't trust it to the contracted baker especially if they are not 'creative.' This cake done incorrectly could end up looking like one big mess! A big mess that would cost you $500! I would either spend the $1300 to have it done right or go with the other cake. To be honest, I actually like the other cake (your second choice) much better, so if I were in your position I would just go with that.
Good luck.

My FH thanks you girls.

I'm going to go with the 2nd cake. It breaks my heart, but like you girls said, I don't need any additional stress (no expenses.)

I just saw that you already chose to go with the 2nd cake, but I just wanted to add that I like that one better too.
