If you guys really want her to come, could you pay for her yourselves? that way it doesn't look like something between families but your parents don't have to pay either?

Discuss the situation with your parents - it's only one person so your parents may not mind, and if they do mentioned what your FIL said. Would they definitely get insulted? They may not take it as a slap at all.

Otherwise, maybe you could offer to cover the plate if you can afford it.

I agree, I'd talk to your parents, I'm sure they would understand that it is an unusual situation and be able to come up with a solution

The situation sux... but at this point you don't want to cause tension btwn families. If it means that much to your brother's family (which is kinda your family now) that she comes then maybe you should just explain to your parents that it's just easier if she comes.... or you can tell your parents that you will cover the cost of the extra guest and if you can't afford to pay for it take the money from your FIL and don't tell your parents!

Don't you just wish we could all just get married without any drama!

I know but the reason they want her to come is because she will be up here to visits the kids prior to the wedding!

are the kids coming to the wedding? Does she have any other friends in the area that she could visit if she didn't come to the wedding?
