I would donate it to Peta, where they will put red paint on it, and us it in their anti fur campaigns!

I agree, donate it to PETA.

I know I could never wear it...

I agree with selling it or donating it

There are TONS of places (I know of one on Merrick Avenue in Merrick) that can re-design it for you.. perhaps you can cut it nad have a matching muff and hat made with it?

I totally agree with Marcella....you can do alot of things with it.

I have one that was given to me when my grandmother passed away. I don't often wear it - but would NEVER get rid of it....
Unfortunately, it's one of the only things I have of hers....

I can't imagine your MIL not being hurt if you told her you donated it - or better yet...sold it.

It's not that I don't understand why people posted what they did....I would never buy one myself...but out of sentimental reasons, I would never get rid of my grandmothers....

Redesign it and wear it! It's a really nice gift! I always wanteed one but was also afraid that some overzealouse PETA member is going to pray paint it!

Perhaps you can only wear it on special occasions! Also, unless you take public transit every day, like I do, you shouldn't worry about spray paint!

And I agree, for sentimental reasons I wouldn't get rid of it. If I gave someone a beautiful coat and she donated it or sold it on e-bay, I would be upset!

my mother has a rabbit coat, but has not worn it in over 25 years...and I honestly don't know what I will do with it when she dies...

Peter Duffy in NYC is where I have my fur cleaned and stored every summer. They are wonderful to work with. I would totally have your fur restyled into a 3/4 length or a jacket.

Good luck!

I'm not into fur myself so I don't know where you should go to alter it. I just wanted to say that if you like it, don't be intimidated. Its a free country, wear your fur in good health. I'm not trying to start contriversy, just adding my 2 cents.

Re: What to do with a fur coat?

Thanks for your help, Ladies. I should have clarified that giving it away or donating it wasn't an option. I don't have any problem wearing fur and would love to wear it, just maybe in a different style. AND, I know my MIL would be very hurt if I gave it away. It is something she saved up for for a long time when she was a little bit younger, and no longer fits her.

That was really my question, how/where to get it remade into a different style. Not really whether or not it was ethical or politically correct to wear it.

Marcella & Sage, good ideas. I am sort of by Merrick Ave., so maybe I will give some places a call.

Megan, I am going to look up Peter Duffy's now. Thanks!

I second Petter Duffy. He does great work. You really need to bring the coat in for a consult to determine how it can be restyled.

I could NEVER sell it. It was a heartfelt gift from my mother in-law, and to me, that is just not right.

I cannot find any listings for Peter Duffy. Does anyone have his number? Thanks!
