what to do with engagement gifts and shower gifts....

i have engagements gifts from my registry put away in boxes..and i know my shower will be several months prior to the big day.....when do i get to open and use them???.i live on my own, where we will be our first year or two...can i start taking them out..or do i really need to wait until we are married???????

I have heard you are supposed to wait until you are married BUT my FH and I just moved in together and we needed a lot of things so we're using a lot of our engagement gifts now.

You're techincally supposed to wait until you're married to use any engagement, shower or wedding gifts. Some also say it's bad luck to use them before the wedding. I think it's probably more a practical thing than anything....If, God forbid, the wedding got called off, you'd need to return the gifts, and obviously you can't return things that have been used.

I honestly think that most people use their gifts as soon as they get them though...My shower was last Sunday, my wedding is a little over 3 months away, and my FH and I are already bickering over whether or not we can use our new Cuisinart Grind and Brew Thermal coffee maker....

ETA: He's the one that's dying to use it....Yeah...I'll admit it....my FH loves kitchen appliances....

Hey, if you need to use them, i say go ahead and use them. When we brought all my cousins stuff back from the shower yesterday, she immediately unpacked the toaster and put it on her counter (their old toaster broke and they needed it, since they are living together now, she figured she might as well start using them now....
The only thing i would say wait on is if you are getting china...

My brother and SIl used their stuff before the wedding..b/c the were living together....go for it!

I wouldn't use them when you are living separately. But if you move in together prior to the wedding, you can definitely open them. I know I will be doing that when we move into our place together.
