What to expect on your first prenatal appointment?
Do they normally do a sonogram? Or is it just a pelvic exam type visit?

do you mean after its already been confirmed you are pregnant? they do neither they weigh you, test your urine, take your blood pressure and ask if you have any questions

My doc doesn't do an appointment to confirm pregnancy. I am having to wait a couple of weeks before they will even see me since the time I took the urine test at home. So I mean the very first appointment you ever went to after you took your home pregnancy test.

my dr was the same way - I called with the news and they're like - ok, come back in 3 wks! I was 8 wks at my first appt and they did a TON of bloodwork - 5 vials I had just had a pelvic exam so she didn't do another, and gave me a big folder on pregnancy, future drs visit, tests, etc.
I also got to see the little bean on a monitor! Couldn't see much though - just a big blob

Every Dr does things a little differently. I never had any blood tests to confirm my pregnancy, my first appt was at 8 weeks. They did a Pap smear (hadn't had one in about a year), took blood, took a detailed history and answered any questions. Then I did have a sonogram afterwards. I also received a bag with magazines and prenatal vitamin samples.

i went in at 8 weeks also - found out at about 5 weeks. We did a sonogram and saw the bean. And then we went into the doctors office and we got a folder with tons of info and went over the do's and dont's. Tons of questions, tons of blood and that was it!

MY first visit was at 6 weeks when I found out I was PG and then the doc did an internal u/s and I got to see the little poppy seed and the heartbeat. That was it! I was by myself and DH was at work!
My next and first real PG appointment (9 weeks) was going over tons of paperwork regarding the medical history of my DH and I. They weighed me, had me pee in a cup (which you will then do for every appointment) and took my blood pressure. Then they went over all the types of testing they can perfom and ask you to sign papers for those you wish to have done. They then took 5 vials of blood from me and made me come back every 4 weeks since then!
